Clear the Deck! Alvarez's 3-Run Blast in 10th Sends Pirates to 7-4 Victory

PITTSBURGH - The Pirates, having just lost 2 of 3 against the Houston Astros, welcome a surging Chicago Cubs team to PNC Park for a three game set. With a packed house on hand, almost at full capacity, Francisco Liriano takes the mound for the Pirates, opposing Carlos Villanueva for the Cubs.

Liriano struggled right out of the gate, loading the bases in the top of the 1st, after singles from Barney, Sappelt, and Castro. Anthony Rizzo would hit a bloop chopper in front of Russell Martin, scoring Darwin Barney to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.

After a Jorge Soler strike out, Nate Schierholtz would ground out, scoring Sappelt to put the Cubs up 2-0. Wellington Castillo would ground out to end the inning. But the Pirates would tie the game up at 2 in the bottom of the 1st, as Starling Marte singled and then scored on a 2-run home run from Pedro Alvarez.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Francisco Liriano led off with a single, looking to help his own cause. Marte would sacrifice to get Liriano to 2nd. But Liriano would be stranded, as Travis Snider grounded out, followed by Andrew McCutchen flying out to center. Liriano would get Darwin Barney to strike out with 2 outs in the top of the 4th to end the inning.

But the score would go into the Cubs favor in the top of the 5th, as Starlin Castro singled with one out, then scoring on an RBI double from Anthony Rizzo to give the Cubs a 3-2 lead.

The Cubs lead wouldn't last long, as Andrew McCutchen blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game at 3.

With Liriano being taken out in the top of the 8th, Hurdle turned to Chris Leroux out of the pen. Anthony Rizzo enjoyed the switch, as he belted a solo home run on the second pitch he saw from Leroux, putting the Cubs ahead 4-3.

In the bottom of the 8th, Starling Marte singled with 1 out. With McCutchen batting, Marte got caught stealing second to leave the bases empty. But McCutchen would hit a line drive, putting him on 1st with 2 outs. Pedro Alvarez singled, but Andrew McCutchen was called out at 3rd to end the inning.

Bottom of the 9th, Carlos Marmol pitching, first batter Garrett Jones would be hit by a pitch. Russell Martin would sacrifice Jones to 2nd, setting up an RBI triple from Josh Harrison to tie the game at 4.

Clint Barmes would strike out and Jerry Sands would ground out to end the threat and send the game to extras. After a scoreless top of the 10th by Mark Melancon, Michael Bowden would take over for Marmol. Travis Snider led off with a single, followed by Andrew McCutchen reaching on a throwing error by Luis Valbuena, that should’ve been an inning ending DP. With the error in mind, Pedro Alvarez stepped up to the plate and deliver; a 3-run walk-off home run to give the Pirates a 7-4 victory.
