Nationals Jump on Pirates Early, Rally Falls Short 4-3

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Pirates got to sulk on their day off from their 10-3 drubbing in Milwaukee. Hoping to put the loss in the rearview mirror, things aren't about to get easier, as the 17-12 Washington Nationals head into PNC Park for a three game weekend series. The pitching matchup in game one looked like it could be a wild one, as the Nationals sent Ross Detwiler to the mound to oppose Jeff Locke.

After a scoreless 1st inning, Jeff Locke ran into trouble in the top of the 2nd. Locke started off by walking Bryce Harper, followed by singles from Ian Desmond and Adam LaRoche. Wilson Ramos hit a sac fly, scoring Harper to give the Nats a 1-0 lead. Danny Espinosa then hit a sac fly to score Desmond, giving the Nationals a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, Neil Walker hit a double to lead off the inning, but Barmes and Locke grounded out. With 2 outs, Starling Marte singled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd, but Travis Snider grounded out to end the inning. After a scoreless 4th and 5th innings, the Pirates started making some noise. Starling Marte led off with a double, followed by a double from Travis Snider which scored Marte to cut the lead to one. Garrett Jones then singled, scoring Travis Snider to tie the game at 2. Pedro Alvarez grounded out to end the inning. With 2 outs in the top of the 7th, Wilson Ramos singled. Danny Espinosa then hit a 2-run homer to give the Nationals a 4-2 lead.

The Pirates bullpen held them in the game, as Mark Melancon struck out the side in the top of the 8th. The Pirates started off the bottom of the 8th with a double from Travis Snider, followed by Andrew McCutchen's third strikeout of the game and a Garrett Jones ground out to end the inning. A scoreless top of the 9th, led to Rafael Soriano in to close in the bottom of the 9th. With 1 out, Pedro Alvarez bombed a home run out to right field and into the Allegheny River to cut the score to 4-3.

With two outs, Brandon Inge came in as a pinch hitter, but grounded out to end the inning and the game.
