Pirates Bats Fall Asleep Against Gallardo, Downed by Brew in Extra Innings 2-1

MILWAUKEE - The Pirates offense exploded in game one of the series, not usually the way things go in Milwaukee. The Pirates also quieted the Brewers, as Wandy Rodriguez had one of his best starts of the season. But the Pirates are up against Yovanni Gallardo, looking to derail the Pirates winning ways.

After a lifeless top of the 1st, Rickie Weeks doubled and then reached 3rd on a ground out by Ryan Braun with two outs. But James McDonald got Corey Hart to strike out swinging to end the inning. In the bottom of the 2nd, McDonald threw one mistake pitch, and Yuniesky Betancourt took advantage of it, crushing it to left field for a solo home run to put the Brewers up 1-0. Scoreless innings ruled throughout the day, as Gallardo had sat down 11 in a row in the Top of the 5th. In the top of the 6th, Clint Barmes lead off with a double, but was stranded as McDonald was out on a foul third strike bunt attempt, Starling Marte lined out, and Travis Snider grounded out to end the inning. James McDonald was going pitch for pitch with Gallardo, as he had struck out 10 in the bottom of the 6th and raised the number to 12 in the bottom of the 7th. In the top of the 9th, the Brewers turned to John Axford for the save, but it wasn't a confident situation as Axford has already blown a few saves and has an average above 9.00. The Pirates got to him right away, as Snider doubled, following by a walk to McCutchen who advanced on a wild pitch. Alvarez hit a sac fly to tie the game at 1 and Garret Jones struck out to end the inning. But extra innings wouldn't last long, as Corey Hart singled and then advanced to 2nd on a ground out by Ramirez. Hart then scored on a single by Jonathan Lucroy to give the Brewers the 2-1 victory.

Player of the Game: Jonathan Lucroy

The Pirates and Brewers square off in their rubber match tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch at 1:10PM.
