Nightmare No More - Pirates Crush Brew Crew 6-1

MILWAUKEE - The Pittsburgh Pirates have been dreadful at Miller Park for the past several years. To turn this team around completely, getting victories at this ballpark would be a huge step in the right direction. Starting in LF for the Pirates, will be Jerry Sands, as Starling Marte was given a day off for rest.

The Pirates started things off in the top of the 1st, as Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen singled. Garrett Jones stepped in and took a 2-2 pitch out of the park for a 3-run home run, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead. After a scoreless 2nd inning, Jonathan Lucroy lead off the inning with a singled, but Wandy Rodriguez got a strike out and two fly outs to end the inning. In the top of the 4th, Garrett Jones struck again, this time with a solo home run to put the Pirates up 4-0. This is the second multi home run game by Jones this season. In the bottom of the 4th, the Brewers got on the board, as Rickie Weeks, Corey Hart, and Jonathan Lucroy singled with 2 outs. Lucroy's singled scored Hart to cut the Pirates lead to 3. In the top of the 5th, Travis Snider homered to put the Pirates back up by 4. Snider's home run was followed by a single from Andrew McCutchen who then scored on an RBI single from Garrett Jones to put the score at 6-1. With his pitch count still in tact, Wandy Rodriguez headed into the 9th, but allowed a single to Ramirez and walked Lucroy, causing Clint Hurdle to pull him after 8 innings. Hurdle turned to newcomer Duke Welker, who was making his MLB debut. Welker got into an even bigger jam then when he came in, as he allowed a single to Gonzalez to load the bases. But Welker showed why he was called up, getting Davis to fly out, Segura to line out, and Gomez to strike out swinging to end the inning. Jerry Sands debut with the Pirates wasn't great, as he went 0-4 including a strikeout and HBP.

Player of the Game: Garrett Jones

The Pirates face a daunting right hander in Game #2, as the Pirates square off against Yovani Gallardo. First pitch, 8:10PM.
