PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced the signing of RP Brian Wilson to a 2yr/2.62m contract with a club option for a 3rd year.
Wilson last appeared in the MLB on April 12, 2012 against the San Francisco Giants. Wilson would get the save, but had injured his elbow during the outing and underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career on April 19, causing him to miss the remainder of the 2012 season. Wilson had expressed confidence that he would return to the Giants in 2013, but because he was coming off an injury and would be owed at least $6.8 million dollars, he was non-tendered after the season, making him a free agent. As of the end of the 2012 season, Wilson ranked third all-time in saves as a Giant with 171.
Pirates General Manager Neil Huntington has done an impressive job piecing together bullpens over the past few years and he believes Wilson can become a vital part to their big league bullpen. Wilson will report to AA-Altoona to begin his path back to the major leagues.
