Pirates Chase Westbrook After 3 Innings, Hold Off Cardinal Rally for 8-5 Win

ST. LOUIS - After splitting the first two games of the series, the Pirates and Cardinals met in a Sunday afternoon matinee for the rubber game of the three game series. With the Pirates on a 10 game road trip, manager Clint Hurdle decided to give a days rest to the majority of starters, giving some of the bench players an opportunity to show what they have.

Playing in center field for the first time this season, Starling Marte hit the ground running in the first, leading off with a single. But the Pirates couldn't muster any offense behind him, stranding him at first to end the inning. After a scoreless 2nd inning, A.J. Burnett helped his cause by reaching 2nd base on an error. Burnett was followed by a two out single from Travis Snider and a walk to Gaby Sanchez to load the bases. Brandon Inge stepped in and got Westbrook to a 2-0 count; taking the third pitch of the at bat and blasting a grand slam to give the Pirates a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals attempted a comeback in the 3rd, as Rafael Furcal doubled with one out, followed by John Jay reaching on an error. But A.J. Burnett got Matt Carpenter to strike out swinging to end the inning. The Pirates struck again in the 4th, as Josh Harrison singled, followed by a single from Michael McKenry. Clint Barmes would then double, scoring Harrison to give the Bucs a 5-0 lead with no outs. But the Pirates weren't done yet as Travis Snider launched a 3-run home run to put the Pirates up 8-0. The Cardinals started chipping away in the bottom of the 4th, as a Beltran double scored Yadier Molina to cut the lead to 7. A sac fly by John Jay in the bottom of the 5th scored Rafael Furcal, who had earlier singled, to cut the score to 8-2. After a scoreless 6th, Matt Carpenter scored on a single from Carlos Beltran to pull the Cardinals to within 5. The Cardinals bullpen kept the Pirates in check, keeping them scoreless through the 7th and 8th innings, allowing the Cardinals to cut into the lead once again in the 8th, with a single from Jay to score Furcal to put the Cardinals within reach. In the bottom of the 9th, facing Tony Watson, Carlos Beltran hit a solo home run with one out to cut the lead to 3. Clint Hurdle had enough at the point, turning to closer Jason Grilli, even though it was not a save situation. Hurdle's instinct worked extremely well, as Grilli got Freese to strike out and Furcal to ground out to end the game.

Player of the Game: Travis Snider

The Pirates continue their road trip in Milwaukee, as Wandy Rodriguez goes up against Marco Estrada in game one - first pitch, 7:10PM.
