Pirates Slip by Cards in 11th Inning

ST. LOUIS - The Pirates saw what the slumping Cards were offensively capable of, losing the first game of the series on a grand slam from Carlos Beltran. Unfortunately for the Pirates, Jeff Locke was taking the mound in game two, a pitcher prone to the home run ball. The Cardinals turned to Jaime Garcia to take the series from the Pirates.

The Cardinals got on base first in the bottom of the 1st, as Allen Craig singled. But Jeff Locke got Matt Holliday to strike out to end the inning. Garrett Jones singled in the Top of the 2nd to give the Pirates their first base runner, but was quickly erased as Russell Martin grounded into an inning ending double play. Both Locke and Garcia surprisingly were locked in, keep each team scoreless through 5 1/2 innings. The Cardinals would be first to hit the scoreboard, though, as John Jay hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 6th to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. But the Pirates would storm back in the Top of the 7th, as Garrett Jones advanced to third on an error, after hitting a 1 out double. Russell Martin then singled, scoring Jones to tie the game at 1. Gaby Sanchez singled, followed by a pinch hit single from Travis Snider, scoring Russell Martin to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Justin Wilson, replacing Jeff Locke, gave the game right back, allowing a solo home run to Carlos Beltran to tie the game at 2. Chris Leroux came in for Wilson, getting Matt Carpenter to fly out to end the inning. The Pirates had a big scoring opportunity in the top of 8th, as Starling Marte lead off with a triple. But Neil Walker would ground out and Andrew McCutchen would reach on a fielders choice and Marte would be called out at home. Pedro Alvarez grounded out to end the inning. After a scoreless 9th, the Cardinals had Matt Carpenter on 2nd with two outs, but Mark Melancon would get Matt Holliday to pop out to end the inning. As both offenses had been struggling, the Pirates broke the tie in the top of the 11th, as Neil Walker lead off with a double, followed by McCutchen again reaching on a throwing error, which lead to Garret Jones being walked to load the bases. Russell Martin would come through again, hitting a sac fly to score Walker, which gave the Bucs a 3-2 lead. With both teams fatigued, a fresh Jason Grilli came in for the save situation and made it a 1-2-3 inning, with a strikeout to Yadier Molina to end the game.

Player of the Game: Russell Martin

The Pirates and Cardinals square off in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon - first pitch, 2:15PM.
