Pirates Knock Around Halladay to Avoid Sweep

PHILADELPHIA - The Pirates took 4 of 7 games against the Phillies in 2012, but so far in 2013, have put up a lackluster effort to get in the win column. The Bucco's face a four game sweep from the Phillies, and are up against a daunting pitcher in Roy Halladay.

The Pirates woke up early in this one, as Andrew McCutchen singled in the top of the 1st to extend his hitting streak to 22 games. In the 2nd, Gaby Sanchez singled, followed by Russell Martin reaching on a fielders chioce and Clint Barmes reaching on a throwing error, scoring Gaby Sanchez. James McDonald hit a sac bunt to score Martin, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Phillies got into the R column, as singles by Rollins, Mayberry Jr., and Brown loaded the bases for been Revere. McDonald lost control and walked Revere, scoring the Phillies first run and cutting the lead to 1. But McDonald got out of the inning, getting Frandsen to ground out. In the top of the 3rd, the Pirates hit back, getting solo home runs from Neil Walker and Garrett Jones to put the Pirates up 4-1. Then, in the 5th, Starling Marte lead off with a double, followed by a single from Walker, scoring Marte to put the score at 5-1. McCutchen singled, followed by a single from Brandon Inge, scoring walker and giving the Pirates a 6-1 lead.
McDonald kept the Phillies in check, until running into trouble in the bottom of the 7th, allowing a double to Mayberry Jr. and singles to Brown and Young, scoring Mayberry to cut the lead to 4. But the Bucs got the runs back, as Jones singled in the 8th and scored on a 2-run home run from Russell Martin, his third home run of the series to give the Pirates an 8-2 lead. Mark Melancon pitched two scoreless innings to seal the victory for the Pirates and to avoid the sweep.

The Pirates now head to St. Louis to face off against the Cardinals in a three game weekend series. Tomorrow's first pitch, 8:15PM.

Player of the Game: Neil Walker
