Phillies Drubbing Sends Pirates to Third Straight Loss

PHILADELPHIA - After losing the first two games of this four game series, the Pirates got some worse news, as Travis Snider injured his forearm in pre-game warm-ups. Snider may be out for a few games. Both the Pirates and Phillies send dominant left handers to the mound, as Wandy Rodriguez faces off against Cole Hamels.

After a scoreless first, Rodriguez got Ryan Howard and Chase Utley to strike out back to back to end the 2nd inning. Both teams were scoreless through three, but the Phillies would strike in the 4th. Rodriguez allowed a single to Carlos Ruiz and then left a ball up in the zone to Chase Utley who crushed the ball out of the park for a 2-run home run to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. The Phillies were back at it in the 5th, with a single from Delmon Young followed by a double from Ben Revere. Michael Young doubled, scoring Delmon Young to put the Phillies up 3-0. Carlos Ruiz grounded out to score Ben Revere and gave the Phillies a 4-0 lead. As Wandy only last 5 innings, Chris Leroux came in for the 6th and struck out the side. But Leroux hit trouble in the bottom of the 7th, allowing a single to Revere, a walk to Young, and a 3-run home run to Carlos Ruiz to put the Phillies up 7-0. Brandon Inge got the Pirates on the board in the 8th, hitting a pinch hit, solo home run to cut the score to 7-1. In the top of the 9th, Andrew McCutchen singled and took 2nd, followed by an RBI single from Russell Martin who ended up being called out at second to end the game and gave the Phillies the 7-2 victory.

The Pirates turn to James McDonald in game 4, looking to avoid the four game sweep.

Player of the Game: Carlos Ruiz
