Pirates, Phillies Home Run Derby Ends in 9-7 Phillies Victory

PHILADELPHIA - The Pirates were on a roll coming into Philadelphia, winning their past five games, including a four game sweep of the Atlanta Braves. But the Phillies knocked the Pirates back down to earth in game one, and turn to Cliff Lee in game two of this four game set to keep them on track.

Early MVP candidate Andrew McCutchen got the Pirates on the board first in the Top of the 1st, crushing a 440ft solo home run, extending his hitting streak to 20 games and giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless bottom of the 1st from A.J. Burnett, the Phillies started taking control of his lack of command, as Chase Utley singled and then scored on a 2-run home run from Lance Nix to put the Phillies up 2-1. A quiet 3rd led to an offensive explosion in the 4th, starting in the top of the 4th. Pedro Alvarez doubled and scored on a 2-run home run by Russell Martin, his 2nd home run in two days, giving the Pirates a 3-2 lead. But the Phillies struck right back in the bottom of the 4th, as Chase Utley hit a 2-run home run scoring Ryan Howard to put the Phils back on top 4-3. After a Starling Marte home run tied the game at 4 in the 5th, the Pirates looked to tack on more, as Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen singled, but were left stranded as Pedro Alvarez flew out at the warning track. The lead for the Pirates didn't last long, as Dominic Brown hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 5th to put the Phils back up 5-4. Finally a scoreless half inning from the Pirates, and the Phillies took advantage. Carlos Ruiz singled, followed by a walk issued to Chase Utley. Delmon Young then doubled, scoring Ruiz and Utley to make the score 7-4. Dominic Brown doubled, scoring Young to put the Phillies up 8-4. With two outs in the top of the 7th, Starling Marte was robbed of his second home run of the game, as Lance Nix climbed the wall and grabbed the ball before it could fall out of the park to end the inning. Young would score in the bottom of the 7th on a fielders choice by Chase Utley to up the Phillies lead to 5. But the Pirates rally started in the top of the 8th, as a Pedro Alvarez 2-run home run and a Gaby Sanchez solo home run brought the Bucs to within 2. Jonathan Papelbon took on the Pirates in the 9th, and shut the door 1-2-3 to give the Phillies game 2 of the series.

Player of the Game: Dominic Brown
