Pirates Stiffled by Lannan, Drop First Game of Series 4-1

PHILADELPHIA - The Pittsburgh Pirates just finished off an amazing home stand, getting them to the record of 12-7. As all Pirates fans recall, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. This year, the Pirates hope to turn the past two seasons into just that, the past. The Pirates open up on the road, with a four game set against their in state rival, the Philadelphia Phillies.

Things started quickly for the Phillies in the 1st, as Michael Young singled, followed by singles from Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard. But Young was trying to be fancy and make it to home and was called out at the plate to end the inning. That didn't hold the Phillies back for long, though, as Chase Utley homered after a Jimmy Rollins single, putting the game at 2-0 in favor of the Phils.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Michael Young singled, followed by a walk to Howard. Delmon Young then doubled, allowing Young and Howard to score, giving the Phillies a 4-0 lead. Jeff Locke, who was being bullied around on the field, gave it right back to the Phillies in the top of the 5th, as he struck out the side in order. The Pirates were striking again in the 7th, as Marte doubled, followed by a single from Andrew McCutchen with one out. But the Pirates couldn't muster up any runs as Alvarez was caught watching and struck out. Jeff Karstens came in for relief in the Bot of the 7th and showed what he can do by striking out the side. In the Top of the 8th, Russell Martin hit his first home run of the season, to keep the Pirates down only 4-1.

Player of the Game: John Lannan
