Swept Out of Town - Pirates Down Braves in Barn Burner 10-8

PITTSBURGH - The starting pitcher matchup on paper looked like it was going to be a good one, as Brandon Beachy and Jonathan Sanchez both came in with mirroring, slightly above 1.00 averages. Each pitcher has been quite impressive thus far this season, giving this game the look of a great pitchers duel.

The Braves hit Sanchez early on, starting with singles from Reed Johnson and Justin Upton in the top of the 1st. After a stolen base by Justin Upton put men on 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out, Sanchez got both Jason Heyward and Brian McCann to ground out to end the Braves half of the inning. With a scoreless bottom of the 1st from Beachy, Sanchez came right back in the 2nd, striking out the side in order. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Pirates hit the scoreboard first, on a solo home run from Garrett Jones to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. The Bucco's struck again in the bottom of the 3rd, as Andrew McCutchen hit a solo home run, followed by Garrett Jones' second home run of the game, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead. But the Braves came right back and returned the favor. A Jason Heyward single started the inning, followed by a single from Freddie Freeman to put two on. Dan Uggla stepped in and over powered Sanchez, blasting a 3-run home run to tie the game at 3. The Braves added on in the top of the 5th, as Justin Upton hit a 2-run home run, scoring Reed Johnson, to give the Braves a 5-3 lead. The lead was cut to one, as Andrew McCutchen hit his 2nd home run of the game. The Braves stormed right back, though, as Gerald Laird, pinch hitting for Brandon Beachy, singled, followed by a single from Simmons and Upton, scoring Laird. Brian McCann then singled, scoring Simmons and Upton, to give the Braves an 8-4 lead. Freddie Freeman struck out to end the inning. The battle continued into the 8th, as Clint Barmes lead off with a first pitch home run to cut the score to 8-5. Starling Marte and Josh Harrison singled, and then scored off a 3-run home run from Pedro Alvarez to tie the game at 8. In the bottom of the 8th, after Clint Barmes reached on a throwing error with two outs, Brandon Inge stepped in as a pinch hitter and stepped in big, as he crushed a 2-run home run to left field to give the Pirates a 10-8 lead. As Jason Grilli was unavailable for the game, Hurdle turned to the resurrected Mark Melancon, who allowed the 1,000 hit to Brian McCann, but closed the door on the Braves to give him his 1st save on the season and the four game sweep of the Braves.

Player of the Game: Andrew McCutchen

PNC Park seemed to spark the Pirates in front of their home crowd, after a dreadful west coast trip to begin the season. The Pirates head out on the road for 8 games, starting with a four game set with in-state rival, the Philadelphia Phillies.
