Home Runs Thwart Braves Rally, Pirates Win 6-4

PITTSBURGH - In game one, the Pittsburgh Pirates won in dramatic fashion against the Braves on a walk-off home run from Pedro Alvarez, to give the Pirates the first game of the series. A good pitching matchup awaits in game two, as Kris Medlen opposes Wandy Rodriguez.

Starling Marte led off the bottom of the 1st with a single, followed by a single from Neil Walker. Andrew McCutchen grounded into a double play, which scored Marte, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. But the Braves struck right back in the top of the 2nd, as Brian McCann hit a solo home run to tie the game at 2. The Pirates looked to take back the lead in the bottom of the 2nd, as John McDonald and Clint Barmes both singled with two outs. Wandy Rodriguez worked the count but flew out at the warning track to end the inning. After a scoreless 3rd, the Pirates broke the 1-1 tie on a solo home run off the foul pole by Garrett Jones to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. The lead got even larger in the 5th, as Neil Walker singled with two outs, followed by a home run from Andrew McCutchen to send the lead to 3. Garrett Jones went yard again, this time hitting a solo out of PNC Park into the Allegheny to give the Pirates a 5-1 lead. Gaby sanchez added a solo home run in the 6th, to put the game 6-1 in favor of the Pirates. The Braves cut the lead to 4, following an RBI single from Simmons. In the 8th, Jason Heyward doubled, followed by a double from Brian McCann to score Heyward, cutting the score to 6-3. Jason Grilli came in the 9th for his 7th save opportunity and ran into trouble. Gerald Laird singled, followed by singles from Simmons and Chris Johnson. Johnson's single scored Laird, cutting the score to 6-4. But Grilli pulled out his best stuff, striking out Jason Heyward and then Brian McCann to end the game and seal the Pirates victory.
