Pedro's Walk-Off Home Run Sends Pirates to 6-2 Victory
PITTSBURGH - After an exciting series win against the Cardinals, the Pirates welcomed the revamped Atlanta Braves to Pittsburgh for a four game series. The Braves have yet to meet off-season expectations, heading into town with an 8-6 record. On the mound for the Braves, was former Bucco Paul Maholm. Maholm would oppose A.J. Burnett, for game one.
In the top of the 1st, A.J. Burnett started off strong, recording two strikeouts and getting Justin Upton ground out to end inning. After Neil Walker was ruled out at 2nd stretching for double, Andrew McCutchen hit a solo home run to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Through 4 innings, A.J. Burnett was dealing, recording 8 strikeouts thus far. In the bottom of the 5th, followed by singles from A.J. Burnett and Starling Marte, Neil Walker hit a sac fly to score Burnett, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 7th, A.J. Burnett got two ground balls, followed by a strikeout to Freddie Freeman to end the inning. Burnett left the field to a standing ovation, not only for his performance thus far, but the strikeout of Freeman was career strikeout number 2,000. Clint Hurdle decided to keep Burnett in for the 8th, but fatigue starting to overwhelm the veteran, as he ran into a bases loaded jam, with singles from Brian McCann, Gerald Laird, and Chris Johnson. Andrelton Simmons lined a ground ball which deflected off Burnett for a single, scoring McCann to cut the score to 2-1. Chris Johnson executed a suicide squeeze, scoring Gerald Laird to tie the game at 2. Burnett was pulled for Tony Watson, who ended the inning in order. With the game tied at 2 heading into the 9th, the Pirates picked up their game for Burnett. Clint Barmes singled,
followed by an error that allowed Gaby Sanchez to reach 1st. With 1 out, Neil Walker grounded out, advancing the runners to 2nd and 3rd. After intentionally walking Andrew McCutchen with two outs, Pedro Alvarez made the Braves pay with a grand slam, walk-off home run to give the Pirates a 6-2 victory.
