Beltran's Pinch Hit Home Run Sends Cards to 5-4 Victory

PITTSBURGH - After winning game 1 against the Cardinals, the Pirates looked to keep their winning streak alive. The Cardinals were sending Jaime Garcia to the mound to oppose Jonathan Sanchez, the biggest surprise for the Pirates thus far this season. The Cardinals are trying to end an early drought in the Central, and put an end to the Bucco's streak.

After scoreless 1st and 2nd innings from Garcia and Sanchez, the Pirates hit the board first. Starling Marte hit a two out double, followed by a two run home run from Andrew McCutchen, his first of the season, putting the Pirates up 2-0. But the Cardinals weren't down long, as Sanchez ran into a bases loaded situation, as Molina, Freese and Descalso singled. Helping his cause, pitcher Jaime Garcia grounded out, scoring Jay to cut the Pirates lead to 2-1. The Cardinals struck again in the 5th, as Allen Craig doubled, followed by a single from Yadier Molina, to tie the game at 2. But the battle continued into the bottom of the 5th, as Pedro Alvarez scored Starling Marte, who earlier doubled, putting the Pirates up 3-2. The Pirates bullpen was cruising into the 8th, when Carlos Beltran came into a pinch hit situation, with runners on first and second. After a 2-2 battle with Mark Melancon, Beltran crushed a three run home run to give the Cardinals a 5-3 lead. With 1 out in the bottom of the 8th, Pedro Alvarez brought the Pirates within one, after a solo home run. But Jason Motte would come in and shut the door on the Pirates on only 4 pitches as the Cardinals stole game two of the three game set against the Pirates in game two.

The Pirates look to take the series from the Cardinals in game three, but they face a daunting task in Jake Westbrook. First pitch, 7:05PM.

Player of the Game: Carlos Beltran
