Cole Throws Eight Shutout Innings in 3-0 Win Against World Champion Giants

PITTSBURGH - After sweeping the Cubs in Chicago, the Pirates begin a six game home stand with NL West opponents, starting with the defending World Champion San Francisco Giants. For the Pirates, #1 prospect Gerrit Cole would take the mound to oppose Tim Lincecum.

With the first pitch of his MLB career, Gerrit Cole threw a 95MPH fastball to Angel Pagan for a strike. Cole would get Pagan to ground out for the first out of the inning. Cole would then get Gregor Blanco to strike out on four pitches.

Following the strikeout, Cole would get Buster Posey to pop out to end the top of the 1st. Lincecum would follow in suit, getting Marte to strike out, followed by a ground out from Cabrera and a fly out by McCutchen to end the inning.

In the top of the 2nd, Cole was locked in, getting Hunter Pence to strike out on five pitches and Brandon Belt to strike out on three pitches, followed by a ground out from Arias to end the top of the 2nd. After Pedro Alvarez led off the bottom of the 2nd with a line out, Garrett Jones crushed a ball to straight away center, out of PNC Park, for a solo shot to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

Travis Snider would single and advance to single on a single from Clint Barmes, giving Gerrit Cole his first major league at bat. But Cole would ground out on his fourth pitch to end the inning. After Cole walked Brandon Crawford to lead off the top of the 3rd, he would get Abreau to pop out and Lincecum to strike out for the second out of the inning. Angel Pagan then singled, putting runners on first and third with two outs. But Gregor Blanco would bunt out to Gerrit Cole to end the threat and the top of the 3rd.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Asdrubal Cabrera doubled with one out, then stealing third with Andrew McCutchen at the plate. McCutchen would ground out to Crawford, scoring Cabrera to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

Cole ran into some trouble in the top of the 4th, allowing a single to Buster Posey to lead off the inning. After getting Hunter Pence to strike out for the second time, Brandon Belt reached on a fielder’s choice with Posey out and second. Arias then singled, putting two on with two outs. Cole would reach deep down, throwing a 98MPH fastball to strike out Brandon Crawford to end the Giants 4th. In the bottom of the 4th, Garrett Jones reached first on a throwing error, but would fall victim to a gorgeous double play on a ball hit by Travis Snider.

Lincecum and Cole would lock in for scoreless 5th and 6th innings, with the Pirates leading 2-0. After Cole pitched a scoreless 7th, Gaudin replaced Lincecum, getting the Pirates in order in the bottom of the 7th. With a pitch count only in the 80’s, Clint Hurdle left the ball in Cole’s hands, allowing him to pitch the top of the 8th. Cole wouldn’t let Hurdle regret it, getting Pagan to ground out, Blanco to strike out, and Posey to fly out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 8th, with Cabrera doubling for the second time, Andrew McCutchen singled, scoring Cabrera to put the Pirates ahead 3-0.

With his pitch count at 100, Hurdle turned to closer Jason Grilli to get the last three outs of the game and that’s exactly what he did. After allowing a ground out to Hunter Pence, Grilli got Brandon Belt to strike out. Arias then reached on a deflected ball off Pedro Alvarez, but Brandon Crawford would strike out on a high cheese fastball to end the game.
