Training Camp/Preseason #1
Posted on November 10, 2008 at 08:40 PM.
On the first day of Training Camp, I traded a 2010 3rd and 2010 4th for DE Elvis Dumervil of the Broncos.

Week 1 vs. San Fransisco
I won 38-28. Here are some thoughts from the game.

-mike mcglynn played amazing in the 2nd half when he started. domenick williams had 9 rushes for 70 yards.1 60 yard TD cames from behind mcglynn. he pushed over the DT, and then got a LB and safety at once(looked more like a glitch, but ill take it). however he sucks at pass blocking, giving up 2 sacks

-the left side of my oline has no depth. my backups there are mediocre, despite their high 70s rating. or it could just be a bad day for them

-chris horton is a beast. 3 interceptions that were fed off from campbell and blake collapsing the pocket. i think i might have to start him at SS and move huff back to FS. gibril wilson might haveto be cut, or he can be a high priced backup or maybe a move to corner.

-i need rb depth. williams sucked besides that one run, and fargas was really bad. michael bush had one carry for 13 yards, but got injured. if hes out for a while, ill need to scout the waiver wire for a back. I also need a speed back since fargas isnt that great. mendenhall is a great power runner, but he has low stamina and he is very bad on outside counters/sweeps. i think i should have picked up ray rice when he fell halfway into the 3rd round. wasnt expecting fargas to be this bad. hopefully he can rebound

-alex brink showed some great potential in the 4th quarter. although he was only 2 for 11. all of his passes were on target despite the pressure and him throwing off his back foot. all of the training camp rookie WRs dropped passes left and right. it was ridiculous

-tim hassleback and jamarcus russel are both in a position battle now. hassleback is a 58 with 58 potential, and russel isa 56 with 78 potential. the only good thing about russel is that he can break sacks with ease. most of his yards came from YAC.

i had a ton of injuries in the game

-TE zinger
-TE peterson
-RB bush
-C sullivan
-LOLB coakley
-LOLB scanlon

speaking of LOLBs, mine suck. but i dont want to trade any more draft picks away, since ive already given a 2010 3rd and 2010 4th for dumervil. my highest is coakley, who is a 67. i need to either pick up a FA(unlikely, i only have 3 mil in cap space) or wait until the next draft.

Week 2 vs Titans
I lost 29-10. Here are some notes from the game.

-i commited 12 penalites, mostly holdings. my backup oline is way to undisciplined

-mike peterson, my UDFA TE, really lives up to his comparision to antonio gates. although he is slow, i would compare him more to a witten type of player, as he breaks a ton of tackles and really bailed out tim hassleback in otherwise was a horrible day for hin

-as bad as jamarcus was, tim hasleback was even worse. alex brink also played pretty badly, although he had some amazing passes thrown in. he really plays like a high potential guy.

-julius jones rushes better as a complimentary back than as the starter. he rushed more effectively when mike bush got more carries. and bush is really good, playing much better than his 67 rating

-i most likely will cut deangelo after he fumbled another KR to go along with the PR and him being burned by fraction jackson. the main reason is that he is an overpaid bum. and i have around 40 mil in cap space next year so i think i should be able to absorb the hit. and i am 99% certain that i will always trade down in the draft, so i doubt that ill be saddled with the salary of a top-5 pick.

-i allowed a KR TD and a PR TD. my defense once again played solid, but special teams and penalties killed me

-in the 1st half, which is really the only half that matters, i was pleasently surprised to stick with an upper echleon team in the titans. they have some weapons for VY in john carlson and desean, and i managed to get a bunch of sacks and stuff the run against their good oline.

-mike mcglynn, my rookie RG, is REALLY good on the plays where he has to sweep to the left side to get blockers. i saw him take 2-3 out for mike bush.

-chris horton is amazing at stuffing the run. hes pretty bad at zone cvg, but seems to be in the right place at the right time, getting another pick that was from barry bookers pressure up the middle

Week 3 vs Cardinals
I lost 17-14. Some thoughts.

-mike peterson is a terrific athlete, and i definetly got a steal in him from getting him in the UDFA

-my backup oline is tremendous at run blocking, letting mike bush run for 100 yards on just 8 carries. they carried out their blocks and advanced into the second level

-at the same time, they gave up 5 sacks to alex brink. all were on the inside.

-i only had 3 sacks the whole game, with tommy blake getting the 3rd one. it was only a coverage sack though.

-ive oficially given up on jamarcus. 0/8 in the 3rd quarter, and was consistently bailed out by mendenhall. 2 INTs also. so my qb depth chart going into the season will probably be hassleback, brink, and russel.

Week 4 vs Seahawks
Won 28-21. Some thoughts below

jamarcus won the job back after going 8-8 in the 2 min drill for me to win the game. he didnt chuck it deep, which was good. he kept dumping it off to julius jones and mike bush and zach miller, which is exactly what i want in the reg season. hassleback throws deep too much, and brink is just raw. Nothing much really to say, since most of the people who played are getting cut anyways.

Preseason Promise-I promised to win at least 3 games.

I got the Mike Zazali and Vonnie Mendenhall draft, and I scouted mid-round DT's. Going into week 1 against the Broncos, here's my depth chart for the start of the season(ovr/pot)
