Jackets Cruise in Opener
Gaborik's Hat Trick Leads the Way on Opening Night

Columbus, Ohio (AP) - On a night which saw a bizarre own-goal (on the powerplay no less!), a record number of hits, and a 31-save shutout; the spotlight in the Jackets dousing of the flames goes to none other than Marian Gaborik. The 31-year old winger not only scored a hat-trick on opening night, but left the game at 18:38 of the third period with a 5-minute major penalty, and accompanying game-misconduct for hitting from behind on an absolutely vicious hit on Lee Stempniak. "I was playing hard to the final whistle," Gaborik told the AP following the game. This was a very physical game indeed, as numerous fights broke out and the Jackets registered a franchise record 51 hits on the night, pummeling a Flames team which also lost a player to injury. Finally, on a night not marked by so many events, the play of CBJ goaltender Sergei Brobrovsky would earn the most attention of the evening. Bobrovsky was on his game from the opening puck drop and the flames simply couldn't solve him tonight. Goalie Bob stopped all 31 shots he faced.
