My Alternate Control Scheme for NBA 2K
Posted on November 21, 2013 at 06:30 PM.
I find it frustrating that almost all of the commands (for offense) are on the stick this year because many times, my player will not do what I want them to do. Oh and some more suggestions for 2K...

When I press triangle to jump, my player should jump, not wait on the ball to come down, no do it 3 seconds later, jump NOW when I put in the command.

Why is shooting behind the backboard an automatic 2 points for the CPU? C'mon man...

When I want to pass to a player and it gets knocked away and I recover... cancel the command, because they aren't open anymore... it almost always leads to a turnover.

Fix On-ball defense, it's ridiculous how easy it is for post players to score on you because your player is either on ice, gets stuck in mud... or takes himself out of the play completely.

When I put an emphasis on limiting perimeter shots... maybe my SF shouldn't be helping so much to protect the paint off ball, he should be locked on to his man, as should the SG and PG.

And for God's sake improve the spacing (maybe next year either make the court bigger, players smaller, or both)

Okay... now to my main point, the controls. This is my alternative for next year and I believe it makes much more sense, because it actually utilizes the face buttons more.

Offense

Square- Shoot

RT + Square- Power Layup or Dunk. If it is a PF or C who just got an offensive rebound , they should attempt a dunk as their first option, layup if a player is in the way, not a hook shot and not a show that puts the ball right in front of the D's face.

Double Tap Square- Drop Step (when engaged in post); Eurostep (when driving)

Post Moves:
L2 + Square-
Hook Shot
R3 away right or left- Post Fadeaway
R3 towards basket- Jump into defender layup or shot (trying to draw foul)
Tap Square- Pump fake
Hold Square immediately following fake- Up & Under
Triangle + L3 away from basket- Post hop away
Triangle + L3 towards basket- Post hop towards basket
Rotate R3- Post spin in direction of R3
Tap R3- Size Up; Fake spin/drop step
Hold RT- Aggressive backdown

Tap X- lob pass; over defense's head

Hold X- Firm pass; can be a chest pass... doesn't have to always be an overhead pass that has plagued the series for years

LT + X- Bounce pass

Double Tap X- Fake pass (standing or on run)

Circle- Call for screen (I actually really like the way this is set up)

Triangle- Hop step/Gather step

Double Tap Triangle- Spin jumpshots

Click R3- Post up/Face Up

Move R3- Dribble moves (I like the way this is set up this year; but I kind of hate that you still do step back dribbles with L3, commit all the way to R3 for dribbling)

RT + Holding R3 (when driving)- Towards basket= basic dunks, signature dunks; Away from basket = reverse dunks (including baseline); Right of basket = power dunks (going up strong in the post), poster dunks; Left of basket = Euro/Hop step dunks (Euro as in Wade's dunk on Varejao a few years ago); Rotate R3 = Spin dunks/360 dunks
This could also be done with using Square and L3

If RT is not held it would be same as above but layups instead of dunks. Towards basket = regular layup
Away from basket-
Floater/Runner
Left of basket- Left handed layup- acrobatic/finesse layup if defense is present
Right of basket- Right handed layup- power/strong layup if defense is present

RT + Flick R3-
This would remain as the command for escape dribbling
L2 + R3- Control passing (I believe this was in 2K11 or 2K12); This should also be a 'smart' pass; uses best possible pass for situation

Holding R3 back away from basket (on perimeter)- Pull up shot and not one of the sideways fadeaways; a real pull up; like a heat check type shot (Think about Melo when he's on a roll and pulls up from 3 once he catches the pass)

Holding R3 to side of basket- Fade towards the side

Defense

Holding R3 towards defender- Hands up (in defensive stance like they have now; looking to play passing lane); deny if guarding off ball; also used for shot contest
Holding R3 away from defender- Hands low; protecting crossover

LT- Defensive stance (not that crouch thing either; please get rid of that nonsense) This is a regular stance for basic defense; still susceptible to offense getting by, but it conserves energy

LT + L3- Locked-in defense; very good in late game situations or if you really don't want player to get by; but it uses more energy

Tap Square- Light reach for ball; more like trying to poke the ball out
Hold Square- Heavy reach for ball; committing to steal; more likely to be called for reaching foul

Circle- Take Charge
Circle Double Tap- Flop

Tap Triangle- Jump with hands straight up (contest shot)
Hold Triangle- Attempt block

RT + Click L3- Hard Foul (when offense is driving)

L1 + R1- Intentional Foul

During Timeouts- one of the defense assignments could be "Hack-A-Shaq (or Howard)

My brain is going blank, if there are any more offensive or defensive options that I left, let me know and I'll try to add it. I really think something like this could help 2K because I think it would be easy to learn for beginners but in-depth enough for veteran players. Let me know what you think!
