You may have read the article in Time Magazine that had the man above on the cover of it. The Time Magazine article argued that college athletes should be paid these days. Not only is this absurd, it could never be successfully accomplished. When we talk about college athletes, we have to remember that they are students. Even if the NCAA is corrupt, the athletes are not athletes first, they are students. College sports are supposed to be like a hobby, not a profession in which they get paid. College athletes are amateurs and amateurs don't get paid for what they do until they become professionals.
Also, anyone who complains that college athletes aren't getting enough is just plain wrong. College athletes who are on scholarship are given free meal plans, free room and board, tuition, school supplies, and even extra money for miscellaneous expenses. The athletes who are at larger schools with successful programs are even set up with nutritionists, player lounges, and they have access to incredibly high-class athletic facilities. College athletes are already compensated for what they do, why in the world should they get more when they aren't even professional athletes?

It's absurd because they're not professionals. Something I left out was that they should be allowed to go to the league earlier, and the same 18 year olds are allowed to go in to the military for the same reason college students play sports, it's their choice.

I think the real problem is the fact that College and Universities are businesses now. They are not educational institutions anymore. Why should the Colleges and Universities not pay their "employees", when it is because of them that you are making these ridiculous amounts of money. We are not paying them for being athletes, we are paying them as employees of the college.

They are not employees of the Universities. Employees get fired for not being good at their job, these kids don't get fired for not being good. They get to stay in school and still get an education.
So if you are gonna pay them, how much do they get? Does everyone get the same amount, or is it like in the pros, you get as much as you can? There is no way of doing it. For years and years it has worked just fine the way it is, leave it alone.

It's not a perfect system, nothing is. You didn't answer any questions I had though. How much? Does everyone make the same? Here is another question, what about having agents? If you are gonna pay them there has to be a contract involved. Does everyone make the same amount, and not just on the team? What about swimmers do they deserve to make as much as football or basketball players? Does the womens basketball team deserve to make as much as the mens team? If you so no they don't then there is a whole other problem started.

What is the equivalent cost of attending a school? The university of maryland is 9000 per yr in-state (tuition only) and over 25000 out of state. add room and board and the cost of the scholarship alone is almost 35-45k per year! add in uniforms, facilities, tutors, books, supplies, health care, etc. each student can be making over 60-80k per year in return for their services. So how do you pay them? how do you keep a fair system? schools like bama can give more than say temple? The only fair solution is to pay the student athlete to be students. a set amount based on what year they are in the program. most colleges and universities refund all money over the amount it cost to attend the school. put a set amount, based on in class performance and what school year. Since most football and basketball programs are self-sufficient, other sports who depend on the bigger programs should get less. This way, it can be fair.. add travel vouchers to the scholarships. There are ways to do this, but to say that an athlete doesnt get paid for their services is false.
Another way to think about this is to give them the equivalent cash value of their scholarship up front.. then charge them for all the services, education, etc. They will learn a life lesson as well, nothing is actually free and it really does cost to go to school and play sports. send them a bill at the end of the school year like regular students. and whatever money is left over, they get to keep.

College athletes do not need to be paid. All revenue from games should just go to the school. College athletes, most of them, are already there on athletic scholarships. That's how they're being paid.

@bxphenom7 You hit it right on the head. College is so expensive, and, because of this, an athletic scholarship essentially is payment.

@TheRealHST Ok. Let's do away with the internships. Many are unpaid, yet the interns are performing jobs that should be paid. I have no sympathy for college athletes. They are trading their athletic skills with an opportunity to better those skills in hopes of going pro, AND they are getting a free education for those on scholarship. Their situation is not different than any other "worker" who produces far more wealth than their employer pays them in salary. These kids know what they are signing up for when they sign their letters of intent. One cannot accept an offer and then later complain that it's not fair. If you buy a house near an airport or train station, you cannot complain about the noise.

You're all making great arguments and quite a few of you are making my point even more clear, you're also bringing in new ideas and factors that I had not considered. Thanks for the feedback guys.
