76ers - NBA 2K9 Assoc. - Rebuilding a Winner

11-17-2008 (v1.0)

Sooo...I wanted to put my association into hyper speed, and move into February.

I did so by simming all the games after my last played gm against the Spurs.

For that 13 gm stretch I went 9-4, and that boosted my record to 28-18; good for 4th in the East.

My next gm is against Boston on Feb 3rd. They're 2.5 games ahead of me so a win here would really put me close to being in 1st place in the Atlantic Div.

We are playing some really good basketball right now. The success of this team is making me lean toward not making any moves which could result in messing up the chemistry or success we are currently having; thats the coach in me talking.

However, the GM in me realizes that w/ a core of Louis Williams, Andre Igoudala, Thaddeus Young, and Elton Brand we can win long-term; since all of those guys are or will be under contract for the next 4-5 years.

The GM in me realizes two of the bigger issues we face...

(1) Quality depth - With Louis Williams currently coming off the bench, him and Maresse Speights are my only reliable scoring options. I can consider Andre Miller gone, either before the deadline or after the season is over, and that would leave only Maresse Speights as my only reliable scoring option off the bench...Not good!

(2) More Bang for my Buck - Dalembert's contract is really bothersome to me.

-- 2008 Salary = $11,238,564 --

I can't afford to pay $11mil to someone who can't even average me a double double. Plus, when I look at the league leaders he isn't even in the top 10 for boards or blocks. In addition, when looking at other Centers around the league there are a lot making a significant amount less than Dalembert, i.e. Chris Kaman, and are far more productive.

For what I pay Sammy I could have one of the below guys:
Al Jefferson
Chris Kaman
Marcus Camby
Andrew Bogut
Andris Biedrins
Memo Okur
Jeff Foster
Joel Pryzbilla

W/ anyone of those guys I coul be even better at rebounding and post defense, or at least break-even.

Okur, Camby, Kaman, Biedrins...They make anywhere from $2-3mil less than Sammy.

I think I've made my case on why Sammy has got to go, but what do I get in return and who becomes my starting Center if I do move him???

As I mentioned quality depth is needed...Well in my association the Nets are currently on a 12 gm losing streak, and are the 2nd worst team in the East.

With that said, I'm HIGHLY interested in adding Vince Carter. The Nets don't need him and his HUGE contract, are spiraling into one of the worst teams in the league, and they're devoid of any kind of production from the Center position.

Adding Vince will allow me to move Thad back to the bench as a great scoring option at SG/SF or PF.

It will come at the expense of Thad's morale, but Carter is a lights-out scorer and would be BIG come playoff time. Young is only 20 and still developing. He has done a great job as the starter, but has also had a fair amount of games where he just disappeared.

NJ has got the rookie Brook Lopez, but he still needs time to develop. By the time Dalembert's contract is up Lopez will be 23/24, and ready to step in as the clear-cut starter at Center for NJ.

I'm sure NJ will want at least one #1 pick and probably Maresse Speights - who I am developing, and reluctant to move - then I will probably have to add another contract to the trade to make it work.

And then again...who is my starting Center??? Theo Ratliff?

Do I get Josh Boone from NJ (who is on their block) and platoon him w/ Theo?

I've gone small using Reggie Evans at C beside Brand since Evans is a great rebounder. That could be an option too if Ratliff becomes the starter since he gets tired fast.

Maybe there would be some way of completing a 3 team deal, sending out Dalembert and Andre Miller for Vince Carter and a lesser Center w/ good rebounding skills....Dan Gadzuric perhaps???

What do you all think?

If you don't make any moves by the trade deadline, I'd definitely consider trying to sign a few role players to add more depth to your bench. As for Carter, that would be interesting move but do you think that if Young's morale went down again after going back to the bench, would rise back up again since he's gone back and forth between starter and bench player lol.

But yea....I went ahead and started up my blog on my Mavs association, you should check it out sometime. I'll probably have more in my 2nd update as in my 1st update, I just wanted to get everyone up to speed with what I was doing.
