Bring Back The Popular Menus

Why is The Blacktop buried in MyCareer? dynamic menus need to be.

Auto-Saves vs Manual Saves

Autosave is ok for people who run into errors, but sometimes you accidentally hit the wrong button while speeding through menus. bringing back old-fashioned manual saves.

Keep Rosters Updated
When big trades happen or teams unveil new alternate jerseys, Visual Concepts has no excuse for taking weeks to port them into the game.

Get Your Online Out Of My Single-Player

No good reason exists for forcing every single interaction in a single-player mode to interface with an online server. Want to offer VC for purchase for single-player modes? Have at it, but make that that chosen transaction be the only time MyGM or MyPlayer interacts with a server.

1. Bring Back Local Saves: This would include the ability to have numerous saves of each type (i.e. eight roster saves, three franchise modes, two MyPlayers, etc.).

2. Bring Back Create-a-Player: In addition, provide update to dated create-a-player model. New haircuts, new facial hair, the ability to add masks, the ability to add goggles, etc.

4. Bring Back ReelMaker with YouTube Upload Capability

8. Bring Back Franchise Control Options: This includes 30 team control, forced trades, jersey options, complete freedom to run an NBA league as we saw fit.

9. Full Fleshing Out of Classic Jerseys: I feel finally completing the collection would allow gamers a more fully customizable experience that'd keep a large portion of the NBA fanbase engaged and locked in (fans of classic teams and fans of creating teams). Speaking of creating teams...

10. Bring Back Create-a-Team. Enhance it: Provide the ability add city names or team names across the jersey breast. Implement a thorough court-editor (similar to NCAA College Hoops 2K8).

12. Provide ability to edit player's shorts length: Primarily for the sake of classic team customization

13. More freeing ability to assign correct accessory and shoe color ways

Gameplay:

Bring Back Tactical Menus

You've always been able to set double teams and dictate the type of defense you want played on specific players in NBA 2K - until last year. I like the quick tactical options presented by the new Points of Emphasis system, but sometimes I prefer to dig into the finer strategic options presented by the old system. Why not give us the best of both worlds?

- Improve team mate AI
- Directional passing needs to be improved
- Guards should be able to easily get by big men
- Take out long, annoying animations.
- Lower the amount of blocked shots
- Team mates help for no reason and leave people open for 3.
- Players with high layup and offensive awareness ratings should be able to automatically protect the ball from a defender if he is about to get blocked instead of just going up with the same lay up and getting rejected

5. Overhaul on-court audio samples: This includes the sound of slam dunks, missed shots, made swishes, made almost-swishes (touching the back rim on the way down), crowd response, and more (thread: Improving Audio and Atmosphere).

Also, from the linked thread above, it'd be cool to see the NBA's newer rims that flex and breakaway slightly to the sides make it into the game (as in the Nate Robinson dunk clip).

Animations:

Blocking

Rebounding

Passing

shooting

alley-oops

layups

dunking

Defense ankle breakers

cutscenes

1. More frantic loose ball pursuit: Instead of jogging lifelessly and unable to catch up to a slow bouncing ball plopping about into the backcourt, I believe players should be in attack mode, lower to the ground, sprinting and ready to dive at any moment:

2. More realistic interaction between players fighting or pursuing loose balls: This would reference diving for a loose ball together, tie-ups, scrums, and tussling side by side when in pursuit.

3. Many more "save" animations when ball is at risk of going out of bounds:

4. Fan or Bench Reactions to Incoming Player: Below is an extreme example, but it'd still be a significant step forward to implement people sitting on the sidelines who could at least somewhat acknowledge that a player may be diving right for them.

Address Clipping Animations
I'd love to leave arms and balls clipping through bodies in the rearview mirror of basketball games. The next-generation consoles offer enough power for Visual Concepts to create realistic collision systems that put an end to these game-breaking glitches.

Online:

Stabilize Gameplay

I'm not sure why this is so hard for Visual Concepts, but every year the NBA game seems to launch with server woes. The company needs to gather the appropriate resources to put this problem to bed for good.

Bring Back Online Association

A lot of people love connecting with friends in online franchise modes. The current-gen version included this mode, but Visual Concepts scrapped it for next-gen because of the rebuilt MyGM mode. Online Association doesn't need to have the same mechanical structure as MyGM - just bring back the old mode.

Create Online Hoops Leagues

I don't mind the NBA Blacktop mode (when it works), but Visual Concepts should take a page out of NHL's EASHL and create a true 5v5 league structure with user-created team jerseys, skill-based divisions, and monthly championships.

- Not sure if it's just me but there is a huge button delay while playing online which makes it almost unplayable. I dont have the same problem with EA games like madden and fifa.

- Better, dedicated servers

MyCareer:

6. Return a Sense of Realism to MyPlayer Mode: Some aspects of MyPlayer that I do not feel match NBA 2K's typical simulation mission statement:

A. Players being paid in gold
B. Mime teammates
C. Near immediate rise to incredible stardom
D. Having to use significant portions of salary to purchase accessories (and different colorways of those accessories)
E. Every, single career featuring the same exact storyline of a player rising from the street courts to the NBA

Some aspects of MyPlayer that I feel would restore a sense of realism that's consistent with what gamers have come to expect out of NBA 2K's quality simulation product over the years:

A. Players paid with real money
B. The re-introduction of the Draft Combine, Summer League, Training Camp, and D-League
C. Varied career paths that do not always lead to earning a starting job after 20 regular season games
D. Spending money only on things that'd actually cost money (i.e. not paying to alter one's shot release)
E. The ability to choose one's jersey number, even after being traded or signing with a new team
F. The game recognizing and choosing the correct jerseys for your team (ex: Sunday night alts). If nothing else, allowing the gamer to make the correct choice.

Create Separate Currencies For Items And Progression
Deciding between buying a new tee shirt or improving your jump shot is a stupid choice players shouldn't have to make. Visual Concepts could remedy this by awarding upgrade points for performance and by paying players a regular cash based salary like real NBA players so they can use that money on off-the-court items.

Fix Clothing Pricing
I don't mind that 2K has created a fashion economy for created players, but having to pay 5,000 VC for a pair of shoes is ridiculous. NBA players make millions of dollars, which means they don't have to save up to buy those new Nike LeBron kicks when they come out. If you want to have big-ticket luxury items, add cars and homes like New Star Soccer did.

Fine-Tune Dynamic Goals
The developers have done a great job honing how the teammate grade awards and punishes players, and the same attention to context should be applied to dynamic goals. I shouldn't be getting "take only quality shots this quarter" goals when I'm shooting 90 percent from the field after three quarters.

Integrate True Coaching
Visual Concepts has a great opportunity to advance the basketball education of its players with MyCareer. Each coach should be teaching his offensive and defensive systems in practices. Learning whether or not your coach wants you to fight over the top of a screen or switch during pick and rolls would help team defense improve its cohesiveness, and I would love to see coaches call more legitimate plays on the offensive side of the court.

Highlight Major Team Moments
I love the off-court interactions with my teammates, but MyCareer skips some of the biggest moments that shake the foundation of a team during the course of the season. Trades and injuries go by with hardly a mention. These should be surfaced with locker room addresses from the coaching staff. It would also be nice to be able to wish your teammate a speedy recovery.

Let Us Chirp Back
Social media plays an integral role in MyCareer, but it's a one-way road. It would be great to be able to issue challenges to other players just like they throw out to me, and giving players the ability to interact with fans (both congratulatory and hostile) would offer some great depth here as well.

- More diverse, less scripted story line.
- Have a currency exclusive to MyCareer so people can't just buy a 99 overall.
- Have team mates do basic fundamentals e.g not leaving people open for three, box out, not letting their men to the paint so easily.

MyTEAM:

- Make legend packs only able to be purchased with MT points so that people cant just buy ridiculous amounts of vc to get a legend and so people who aren't willing to pay aren't disadvantaged.
- Increase difficulty.

11. Add More Classic Teams: There's a dedicated faction of basketball gamers thirsty for any sort of classic team improvements. Classic teams are real NBA teams that have existed and are very much a part of an authentic NBA experience. Even if rights acquisitions are difficult, there's many recent classic teams (comprised largely of current players or classic players already in the game) that'd make wonderful additions (2007 Warriors, 2000 Raptors, 2008 Celtics, 2006 Suns, 2000 Lakers, etc.).

Excellent read man. i was extremely disappointed in 2k14 next gen. All these tweaks 2K could and should do can make 2k15 epic. Now they left room for EA just a lil bit. Keep up the good work man. I truly believed you covered every issue out there. Sad part about it though is the 2K sports can EASILY do all of the above or have done so in the past, but gotten lazy due to lack of competition. Oh well.

Man!!!!!! it all comes down to real world money!!! i refuse to play myteam, too many people just pay intead of play, day one my bronze squad faced legends and gold players. and of course there was no way to win. quit after two days never looked back at that mode. Myplayer and GM i just grind away and use the app to get my VC.

So to end this VC is never going away sadly.

I completely agree with the entire post, excellent work! Clear and concise...

I would like to propose an addition though. 2K needs to reinstall the original body editing features. Many people missed this aspect of editing players because it was removed during the initial patch.

To better understand what I'm talking about, simply delete your current 2K14 game data, turn off your network setting so that your are disconnected from the internet and reinstall NBA 2K14. From there if you try to edit a player you'll notice that there are more dynamic body editing feature like "torso length" aspirate from "leg length." These features allowed the gamers to truly shape physically unique players, like Giannis Antetokounmpo, as there are in real life, adding amazing diversity and detail to the game. This was a game changing feature that sadly and inexplicably got removed.

Please add this feature to your wishlist, I'm sure your opinion holds more weight than us ****** gamers/consumers. You would be doing all a service

We need online lobbies back & a better match making & ranking system.Just because you play 5 million games more than the other guy your quality of wins or loses should determine your ranking & online lobbies will allow the best to trahstalk & battle the best

IKC I really like this post. I do have a question for you tho ... You wrote, "The re-introduction of the Draft Combine, Summer League, Training Camp, and D-League". It got me thinking about those people that play on HOF but aren't any good or just arent ready for HOF. Do you think it would be a good idea if they made it to where if you started your career in the combine, summer league, or rookie show case as a grading tool for the game. Then you get drafted and lets say you set the game to all star but you're still not getting it done wouldnt it be cool if the game could have you sent to the d league and the difficulty automatically lowered one skill level and until you can dominate the d league you cant go back to the nba?

Well my brother just told me it was like that on 2k10 or 11

U shouldn't play the whole first yr of my player especially if you are not a high draft pick. It's wack if you can be a 99 by the end of your first season. I like the idea of changing the story around too. They should add a draft combine where you do some drills for some skill points and then maybe u play a game to see where you end up in the draft. Good write up

@Raycool you are on point. I was thinking of writing a blog specifically about player models. In my opinion, it’s one area that doesn’t get enough attention and/or criticism. It makes zero sense that next gen 2K has only two player models. The skinny model, and the little bit thicker model. At this point in the game, there should be a lot more variation in the models, along with some body editing as you mentioned. Take EA’s NCAA football for example… In those games they would have different player models for each position, over at least five player models. Not to mentioned, weight actually changed the appearance of the model as well, which it does not in recent NBA 2K’s.

Back to body editing, I remember in some of the older NBA 2K’s, the user had the ability to alter certain body parts. You could make the chest smaller or bigger, along with the thighs, legs, forearms and butt. They really need to bring that back. Not to go all Michael Sam up in here, but speaking of butts… where are they with NBA 2K’s current player models? The gluteus maximus is a very important muscle in the performance of an athlete, especially basketball players. Think about guys like Charles Barkley, Rick Mahorn, or Mark Aguirre. How are the shorts being held up by the 2K player model? Anyway, another thing that should be added for variation with the player models, is uniform fit. Nowadays most players wear a more tailored, form fitting jersey if you will, as opposed to the baggy jersey. Of course, the more common fit that is being worn by players today, is not represented in NBA 2K. It would be nice if the jersey and shorts were independent of each other, and both could be adjusted on every player (I hate looking at MJ’s player model in 2K. The GOAT should be recreated close to perfection). Lastly, shoes! Shoes on players in 2K is poorly done. When a person playing basketball puts on his shoes, he laces up. Meaning he creates a snug fit with his shoes. He doesn’t just slide his feet into the shoes and start playing. The shoe model in 2K looks like the shoe is on display, rather than on a players foot playing basketball laced up tight. I’ve always felt that shoes in 2K look more like boots on the players rather than actual basketball shoes. The proportions seem off. This is one area where Live has 2K beat. The socks as well. What happened to the NBA logo on the socks and proper thickness? We also should be able to change the color of the socks from black to white to team color.
