NFL: Kirk Cousins Is The Real Deal

Kirk Cousins: An NFL starting waiting to happen...where will that be?

On NFL Draft day I went on record as stating the Washington Redskins got a steal in the second round when they drafted Michigan State’s Kirk Cousins. Cousins I felt was a NFL ready QB who could be a starter in this league in the right situation. I saw a team with an eye on developing their future QB taking him or a team that needed a QB right now. I was surprised as most when the Washington Redskins took Cousins after selecting Robert Griffin III with the number two overall pick.

Kirk Cousins was a very good collegiate QB. Cousins threw for 9,131 yards, 66 touchdowns to 30 interceptions and posted an All-Time Big Ten best 146.1 QB efficiency rating. Cousins is every bit a QB, a polished young man who is without doubt in command when in the huddle. Cousins’ being drafted by the Redskins is going to add unwanted pressure to Robert Griffin III, especially if he falters early as Cousins will have his supporters. Mark my words, if RGIII doesn't live up to the billing there will be a groundswell of support for the former Michigan State QB.

For the record, I don’t have Cousins starting in any game this season unless RGIII is injured (which given his slight frame is a not outside the realms of possibility). Coach Shanahan has invested a lot in Griffin III and he knows his job is on the line if he has drafted a JaMarcus Russell or worse. That is unlikely though I was over the moon that my Indianapolis Colts didn't buy in to the ESPN hype machine that was around RGIII pre-draft.

Kirk Cousins showed in today’s pre-season game versus the Chicago Bears (18/23 – 264 yards – 3TD/0Int) that he will make the most of any opportunity that comes his way. There is no QB controversy in Washington though things will get interesting if and when RGIII struggles or gets injured. Cousins was high on some scouts lists after the combine and even he misses out in Washington, I can see Cousins starting elsewhere in the next few seasons - the question is what uniform will he be wearing?

Nice write up. I sort of felt that Washington picked up Cousins as a backup plan to RGIII as you said, or maybe they saw an opportunity to draft a valuable trade commodity down the road. Either way I believe you are right that Cousins will get his shot to start in the NFL.

Thanks mate. I appreciate the comment.

I'd love to see Cousins be a starting QB somewhere like KC or ARI in the future, and outshining RGIII and the skins.

@Hadler, no doubt. He will be like a Matt Cassel or Matt Flynn. Just give it a few years and he'll have a starting gig of his own. Probably either Jacksonville or Oakland lol.
