Madden 13: Tebowmania Knows No Bounds
Posted on August 6, 2012 at 11:04 PM.
Full disclosure: My intention is to secure a position here at Operation Sports primarily covering either Madden, FIFA or NCAA Football. I am a free-lance sport journalist here in Australia and this is the first step towards a career in an industry I am passionate about. Thank you for reading and your support. Tim Tebow: Good luck stopping this beast in Madden 13!

I am not going to bore you with the details of Tim Tebow’s 2011 season with the Denver Broncos. We all know the story. He replaced Kyle Orton, went 7-4 as a starter and against all odds defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers at home in the first round of the NFL Playoffs. It was magical. It was like a movie script was playing out before our very eyes. Tebowmania was fever pitch; it was something I haven’t witnessed in my twenty five years as a NFL fan. Sorry Cincinnati fans, it even eclipsed “Blake-mania”.

It has been said that Tim Tebow has a magnetic personality, he draws people in. Tebow has been dealing with the media since he was a 16 year old in High School and is an old hand at dealing with the likes of Ed Werder, John Clayton and co. If it isn’t ESPN following his every move it’s FOXSPORTS. If it isn’t FOXSPORTS, it’s any one of the many networks covering the NFL wanting a piece of the 24 year New York Jets back up QB.

Whilst I knew the force pf Tebowmania was strong (something that has all but ruined the career of Skip Bayless such is the nonsense he comes up with in relation to the former Gators QB), I was certain the Madden ratings gurus would not be swept up by this force of nature. I was wrong. Why?

Tim Tebow has a career completion percentage of 47.3%. Ladies and gentlemen, Tim Tebow doesn’t complete more than 50% of his passes yet the 77 Overall rated QB in Madden 13 has a overall Throwing Accuracy rating of 72! Excuse me? Did I miss something here?

Let’s look at four examples.
  • Recently released Steelers back up QB Troy Smith has a career completion percentage of 51.7%, Smith’s Throwing Accuracy rating is 69.
  • Vikings back up QB Joe Webb has a career completion percentage of 57.9%, Webb’s Throwing Accuracy rating is 67.
  • Cowboys back up QB Stephen McGee has a career completion percentage of 56.1%, McGee’s Throwing Accuracy rating is 67.
  • Browns back up QB Senecca Wallace has a career completion percentage of 59.2%, McGee’s Throwing Accuracy rating is 73 or one point more than Tebow.
Tim Tebow’s accuracy aside, he is rated 77 Overall. With his more than ample Throwing Accuracy set at 72, Tim Tebow with any half decent Madden gamer at the controls can lead the Jets to the Super Bowl and rack up a Hall Of Fame type career.

I have no doubt that Tim Tebow is going to be tagged as “cheese” by the online gamer as you will be able to dump short passes to your receivers moving the chains up the field. Combine this with his ability to run armed with a Throw On The Run rating of 80, Tebow is going to be one difficult beast to handle. If you're in the Red Zone with Tim Tebow taking the snap, you're going to score a bunch of touchdowns.

This Madden gamer is excited by the release of Madden 13 and whilst I recognize that the ratings are more in depth and will have more an effect this season, I can't help but feel Tim Tebow is a overrated not only in real life but on the digital football field as well.

As a Steelers fan i witnessed backup QB went 13-0 in regular season with 5 4QTR comebacks, with win over unbeatable record-setting Patriots (25 wins in a row) and much more better skills than Tebow. But there was NO HYPE at all, that is why nobody know about it.

Thanks for the correction. My error.

I agree Galerus! Big Ben defiantly did that and got no where near the hype of Tebow, but hey he does have 2 Super Bowls!Big Ben is probably the toughest QB in the league and one of the only ones who can shrug people off when they rush him.

Roethlisberger was the 11th pick by the Steelers and Coach Cowher's anointed franchise QB. Fate stepped in and the Big Ben era started earlier than anticipated and the rest is history.

Every single QB on an NFL roster could've made that game winning throw against the Steelers.

Is Tebow ringing true as Cheese since you picked up Madden?

Tebow is overrated. Stafford is underrated.
