This is part two in the "internet connection permitting, get online!" series.
First I want to say that it might be a mode designed for younger players, but in the end it's still 2k, and it can be fun if you do it right. Player lock opens up a whole new set of possibilities. You can play any role you want. You can even let the computer do its own thing a lot and play 'superstar role player.'
Don't say it's too limiting. I think that looks at things too narrowly. A lot of players skillset does not define how they play. Think about Russell Westbrook and how much he shoots even though he's not really good at it. Larry Bird probably didn't have many high attributes, he just had high IQ and a really wet shot he could get off vs anyone. If you consider that, it's easier to find a role you enjoy and go into playing it and play it your way.
I would play on Hall of Fame, but All-Star is also a suggestion. Basically All-Star is for shooters because the contests the computer gets beyond that are too ridiculous. It's not going to help you get better, in my opinion, as much as All-Star would, if you're trying to learn how to get open and make shots.
However, for Hall of Fame, there are plenty of things that happen that are like HoF on regular 2k. Just computer doing stuff that's stupid, but there are two advantages. One is that everything you do is worth more and the other is that your computer teammates are playing at their highest level as well. This lets you enjoy the feeling of actually playing basketball even if it's with "bots." Sometimes your teammates will play like trash and other times they will be ready to carry.
I would recommend playing on 2k cam even though it 'looks like trash.' Because you're basically going to have to use that to play online. It gives an unfair advantage to seeing the floor that no other camera can offer, in my opinion.
Thank you, and get online...! Let's win 2k back. It's like VOTE. I'll keep saying it.
