Bengals Defense Silences Rodgers, Improves to 3-0
The Bengals improved to 3-0 on the young season last night by getting to Aaron Rodgers early and often. The Bengals vaunted defense held the all-pro to a 41.0 Quarterback Rating and a 43% completion percentage (16-37). For the second week in a row the defensive line created problems for the opposing quarterback by getting pressure from the front four. Geno Atkins in particular built a vacation home in the Green Bay backfield on his way to racking up 5 sacks in the game.
The Bengals run game gave the defense plenty of rest on the sideline as the Bengals nearly doubled up on them in time of possesion (31:32 vs 16:28). Gio Bernard, who had supplanted BJGE as the Bengals starting Running Back was hit hard in the 3rd quarter and lost for the next 5-7 weeks with a fracture in his right arm. Green-Ellis was already performing admirably at that point, however. He averaged 5.5 yards a carry on the day and scored twice.
Andy Dalton was good enough again, going 16-23 for 193 yards, a Touchdown and an INT. He connected with Riley Cooper 7 times for 75 yards making Cooper the leading wideout.
The Bengals sit high atop the division going into Week 4 were they take on in-state rival Cleveland who is a dismal 0-3.

Bengals Outlast Bears In Season Opener
The Bengals insisted on fighting through a challenging start to the run game and it paid off down the stretch as ball control and solid defensive stands led to a season opening victory in Chicago.
The Bengals jumpstarted the run game when RB Giovani Bernard entered the game late in the 2nd quarter. The change of pace by the rookie paid off immediately as the offense was able to control the clock and pound the rock until the fat lady sang.
She began singing about midway through the 4th quarter when the Bengals began to run away with it and eventually went up 17 on a M. Nugent FG. Until that point the game had been highly contested, with both teams entering the half neck and neck at 17.
M. Forte's dominance in the first half did not carry over the second and though Jay Cutler was able to connect several times for long pass plays, consistency and accuracy was a problem preventing the Bears from converting crucial 3rd Downs when they were still in the game.
A. Dalton was solid throughout completing 15-21 passes for 229 yards and 3 TD's. The bad news, however for Dalton, was the loss of his favorite target, AJ Green. He was hit hard after making a catch in the red zone early in the 1st quarter. Reports are that he'll miss at least 6 weeks with a broken collarbone.
"We have guys that can fill in," Dalton said after the game. "Of course you're going to miss the presence of a guy like AJ but I think Riley, Zach, of course Jermaine, those guys will step up and fill the void."

Predictions
The Bengal Beat sees it's very own Marvin Lewis winning Coach of the Year honors. Of course, right? If Marvin Lewis can take a salary cap with $25 million unspent dollars and turn what is now one of the longest tenured careers in the league into a season that produces the franchises first playoff win in over a decade, this will be a shoe in.
Also, with the return of Sean Payton in New Orleans, we see Drew Brees having what some might call an "up" year. The Saints signal caller is still one of the most accurate passers in the league and looks to bounce back from a disappointing season last year without his friend and coach.

Bengals D, Ground Game Dominant in Preseason Finale
The starting unit took a lap around the field so to speak and then handed the ball off to the reserves in this Week 4 beatdown of the Indianapolis Colts. The score may look modest, but the Bengals defense was relentless tonight, racking up 5 sacks and allowing just over 200 total yards of offense.
The ground game was on display tonight as Bengals coach Marvin Lewis took the opportunity to clear up any confusion about who will be relieving Benjarvus Green-Ellis in the backfield this season. Both Bernard Scott and Giovani Bernard looked impressive but most of the carries were given to Scott who accumulated 87 yards on the ground.
With John Skelton sidelined due to a herniated disk for half the season, the Bengals relied on backup Thaddeus Lewis to carry the load at QB. Questions still linger going into week 1 of the regular season about the Bengals propensity to sign a 3rd active QB. If they do, it will mean the end of the road for someone in orange and black.
The regular season is up next. Fans of the Bengal Beat can expect a 2013-14 Season Preview coming very soon. Keep your head bobbin to the Bengal Beat all season long.

Shootout In Big D
The Touchdowns came by the truckload, but it was a Mike Nugent FG that made the difference in this wild west shootout between the Bengals and Cowboys.
Romo and Dalton looked excellent in limited action. In fact, Romo was a perfect 7-7. Even Kyle Orton went nuts, winging the ball all over the field for 346 yards and 4 TD's. Thaddeus Lewis saw extra time on the field for Cincy tonight after John Skelton left with a Herniated Disk that will sideline him for almost half of the regular season.
Riley Cooper was released this week after a difficult situation became too hard to handle in Philly, but his debut as a Bengal was perhaps just was he needed in the wake of the controversy. He was just a yard shy of reaching the century mark and snagged 2 TD catches to boot.
"It was good to get back out on the field. That's really all I can say right now," Cooper said. "It's a fresh start. But I'm going to continue to try to prove myself to these guys and continue to improve."

Locker, Greene, Too Much For Bengals
Ryan Fitzpatrick got the start for the visiting Titans, but it was Jake Locker who stole the show with his impressive performance in relief. Locker's arm and Shonn Greene's legs together were too much for the Bengals who fell to 1-1 in the preseason campaign.
After the game Marvin Lewis was visibly frustrated by questions about the inability to slow down the Titan run-game.
"Well, you know, if you can't stop them, if you won't stop them on 1st and 2nd down... what makes you think you're going to stop them on 3rd?" The Titans went 80 percent on 3rd down conversions.
Andy Dalton continues to be accurate and the run game still looks to be a productive part of the offense this season, but the reserves tonight stalled far too often to keep up with Tennessee's potent offensive attack.
We'll be coming to you live from Jerry World in Week 3, as the Bengals take on the the Cowboys in Big D.

Bengals Win Preseason Opener
The Cincinnati Bengals and Atlanta Falcons faced off to start each seasons Preseason slate. As expected, little was seen of Falcons offseason acquisition Steven Jackson. He carried the ball only twice accounting for 6 yards. Third year veteran (shall we say?) Andy Dalton was intercepted early by Thomas DeCoud, who returned the pick for a TD. The Bengals finally got on the board in the 2nd Qtr with a M. Nugent FG and took the lead with a short TD burst by rookie Giovanni Bernard. They never trailed again. Next week the Bengals welcome the Tennessee Titans to the Jungle in Cincinnati. Stay tuned to the Bengal Beat all preseason long for scores, news and updates.

The Carolina Hurricanes etched their names in the record books tonight as they completed the fourth 3-0 comeback in NHL history by knocking off the number one seeded Canadiens in Montreal. The Hurricanes fortunes turned as passing percentages began to rise. After a sloppy start to the series, Hurricanes Coach Kirk Muller began to emphasize an increase in puck protection and committing less turnovers. With less turnovers and more tape to tape passing, the Hurricanes saw a dramatic rise in shots in games 4-7, which turned into more goals. But in this dramatic Game 7, it was the Canes buttoned down defense and sharp goaltending that secured the victory.
Former Conn Smythe winner, Cam Ward had 21 saves, a few of which made the highlight reel, and played as smart a game in net as he has in weeks. His effort in the crucial game 7 in Hockey's hometown was nothing short of legendary.
The GWG came :23 after the drop of the puck starting the 3rd period, when the Captain Eric Staal reeled in a bouncing puck from the stick of teammate Jusi Jokinen, and flipped it behind a lunging Carey Price. Andreas Nodl added the empty net goal with :17 to go.
Carolina will now travel to Pittsburgh to face the Penguins who are the new high seed in the Eastern Conference. Second round action begins this week.

The Hurricanes won their second straight game in as many nights when they came away with the final two points of the Hockey Night on OS regular season against Ottawa tonight. Cam Ward was stellar in net again as he stopped 26 of 27 Senator shots. Jussi Jokinen struck first and scored early for Carolina, just 3:12 after the puck dropped, but would later be matched by a Jason Speeza power play goal in the 2nd Period. The decisive GWG was scored by Jeff Skinner who collected a rebound in the crease from a Chad Larose wrister and punched it passed Craig Anderson who managed 23 saves on the night.
The win moves Carolina to 6th in the Eastern Conference temporarily as the 7th, 8th, and 9th place teams (Islanders, Flyers and Jets respectively) still have games remaining on the schedule. The Hurricanes will be able to know they did all they could to secure a birth in the post season but will be left waiting and watching the league wrap up the regular season before they know their ultimate fate.

Cam Ward looked focused and determined as he stopped all 27 Capitals shots and the Captain, Eric Staal, scored twice to earn 2 vital points in the Eastern Conference standings. The win gives Carolina 85 points vaulting them over Tampa Bay, the New York Rangers, and Winnipeg for a tie with Philadelphia for 8th position. The Jets and Devils are the only teams with games remaining that, with a win, could complicate the Hurricanes chances of reaching the Stanley Cup Playoffs. While the win against division rival Washington was sorely needed, the race for the remaining spot in the Hockey Night on OS playoffs may very well come down to Carolina's final game against Ottawa, who will be playing for nothing but pride when they strap on the skates at the PNC Arena in Raleigh tonight.
Notes:
-The GWG came in the 2nd Period on the only one of six power play opportunities capitalized on by Carolina.
-Washington outshot Carolina 27-16 in the game.

The Hurricanes fell two spots from 4th to 6th in a tightly contested Eastern Conference race. The slide happens as we begin the final advance of the regular season with 7 teams within 5 points of 4th place in the standings.
4. Toronto Maple Leafs - 85 Points (40-31-5)
5. Philadelphia Flyers - 84 Points (39-32-6)
6. Carolina Hurricanes - 83 Points (35-29-13)
7. New York Islander - 82 Points (37-32-8)
8. Boston Bruins - 81 Points (40-36-1)
----------------------------------------------------
09. New Jersey Devils - 81 Points (37-34-7)
10. Winnipeg Jets - 80 Points (36-33-8)
Three of the Hurricanes remaining five games are against playoff teams, Montreal, Washington and the New York Islanders. The game at Nassau Coliseum will be the most pivotal match-up in sorting out the cluster of teams competing for the final 5 spots in the playoffs, as both Carolina and New York are within just a couple of points of either moving up or out of the standings. The waning moments of the regular season will provide nothing short of furious excitement as we determine the HNonOS playoff seeding.
