Welcome to the Association...I think

I bought NBA 2K13 in something of a panic. I wasn't trying to grab it at launch, I wasn't racing a confused grandmother, in fact the Best Buy that I dawdled in while I pondered my decision was quite lightly populated. My previous experiment with NBA 2K11 was a moderate success. There were a few entertaining franchises and experiences playing with family and friends. The player career was rather catastrophic though, so the less said about that the better. Overall I didnt really regret the 30 dollar investment it ended up being by the time I had purchased it, but I had traded it in to Gamestop a few months before (I got approximately four laffy taffys and a shiny nickel in return). With a general downturn in my interest of playing other games I had, my mind drifted to sports simulations, of which I had been particularly starved since the terrible failure of Madden 13.

So I started looking up a few videos for the franchise mode of 2K13 because I had heard very good things about it and you know, it sort of scratched that itch, but the thought of actually owning it lingered in my mind for a few days after. One day, after a rather crappy beginning to the day, I drove over to my local big plaza (which is a town over) and went in to the Best Buy. I usually go for Gamestop, but I was just not feeling it that day, I didnt want to hear any more about pre-orders. It was still the full 60 at the time, and while I was pacing around holding the case, it dawned on me how I rarely actually pay the full 60 for a game (I usually take advantage of a sale or just wait for it to get cheaper). This was a pretty big investment on my part. Should I do it? While my previous go around wasnt terrible, would I really get into this? Or would it just gather dust on my shelf next to my copy of Dragon's Dogma (side note: It's not a terrible game by any means, I just can never get into it fully).

I bought it. It all happened really quickly I immediately had buyer's remorse, though I admit, that would hit me even if I bought a new Maserati for 5 bucks. Well, my initial explorations into it were okay, and I did enjoy the advancements made, but I felt quite out of my depth, since it didn't quite match up to my level of NFL knowledge and it all seemed so big. Fast forward a few months and it was one of my most consistently played games. The actual games were pretty fun and I was having a pretty good time running my franchise. Of course, being me, my primary fascination was creating strange new rules and limitations to ensure that I would have to think differently about my approach. And the true source of my entertainment came from doing these franchises with my brother and best friend on the same box. We'd have so much fun doing so many fantasy drafts that we would lose track of what exactly was our last save. Marking the epic matches between my brother and friend. Even having a fun prediction game for every season's playoff matchups. More often than not, whenever my friend came over, any other ideas for games were scrapped in favor of more franchises. In fact, there is now a common joke between the three of us where in unrelated circumstances we'll just blurt out 'New Franchise!' then we all laugh, but then we pause and consider.

Stay tuned for my thoughts on my longtime nemesis, MyCareer mode...

In the meantime, have a very nice day and take care!
