ORLANDO RIPS UP SECOND RIVAL ON THE ROAD
VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Happel turning defense into offense, a circus dunk, and taking it strong to the basket
Boston, MA (AP) - The "magical" streak continues. Make it 10 in a row now, as Orlando has Boston fans feeling green thanks to a 103-86 victory at the T.D. Garden. The Magic got off to a hot start, leading the Celtics 28-18 after the first quarter. But, Boston turned up the defensive pressure and Orlando turned the ball over way too often, allowing the C's to cut the deficit down to 2 by halftime. Orlando came out to start the second half firing though, hitting 15-25 shots in the third quarter to regain a double-digit advantage, and it never got any closer. "If anything, we learned a valuable lesson," said Orlando forward Brian Happel, who's torched the Celtics so far this season, "That second quarter showed exactly why we have to play 48 minutes of basketball. A veteran team like that will eat you alive if you don't. We're fortunate we were able to pull away again in the second half."
Once again, the Celtics couldn't come up with a defense to solve Happel. He went off for 44 points on 19-32 shooting, including 4 three-pointers. He also pulled down 12 rebounds and nearly completed the triple-double with 7 assists. Magic Center Dwight Howard had another monster game, scoring 18 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. Over Howard's last four games, he's averaged a shade over 20 points per game and 17.5 rebounds per game. Andray Blatche scored 16 points on his way to a milestone, scoring the 5,000th point of his career. DeJuan Blair had an excellent game off the bench, as well, scoring 10 points and collecting 5 rebounds in 18 minutes of action.
Allen struggled, shooting just 3-13, including getting this shot blocked by Happel
As for the Celtics, five players scored in double-figures, but it wasn't nearly enough. Boston's high scorer was Paul pierce, who had just 17 points. Glen Davis was a bright spot for the C's off the bench, putting together a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) in 33 minutes. Rajon Rondo dished out 7 assists. But, he couldn't put the ball in the ocean, hitting just 3-18 from the field.
The win allows Orlando to maintain its 2 game lead over Miami in the Southeast Division, while Boston sits in third place in the Atlantic Division, 1.5 games behind New York. While Orlando managed to shoot the ball well in getting the relatively easy victory, there are some points of improvement. The Magic turned the ball over 16 times, including 14 steals by Boston. Orlando needs to take better care of the ball. Also, the bench has not been performing very well lately, and that trend continued. The Magic bench was outscored 35-14.
Happel took advantage of any open space he had, hitting 4 three-pointers, including this one over Allen
Next week will be a busy one for Orlando. The Magic welcome Minnesota to the Amway Center Monday night, followed by three road games - Phoenix, the Clippers and the Lakers.
