ORLANDO STING HORNETS, WIN ANOTHER BLOWOUT
Orlando, FL (AP) - The defending champs are on the lookout for some competition. Orlando coasted past yet another opponent, this time beating up on New Orleans 103-82. The Magic are winning games by an average of 20+ points. And, some of the teams they're destroying are not just weak teams. Orlando dismantled its rivals, the Celtics, and just slapped around the Hornets, who were 8-4 coming into the game. The difference maker in this game was the third quarter. The Magic held a slim 6 point margin at halftime. But, Orlando went on yet another one of its vaunted runs, 21-2 over the first 6 minutes of the third quarter. And, the Magic ended up outscoring New Orleans 28-8 for the quarter. The rest, as they say, is history.
Chris Paul realizing too late that he shouldn't have gotten in Happel's way
Orlando star forward Brian Happel captained the offense, as usual. He poured in a game high 41 points. Happel also came close to a triple-double, notching 13 rebounds and 8 assists. His teammates came to play, as well. Dwight Howard added a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 13 boards. Gilbert Arenas, while struggling from the field (6-17 FG, 1-8 3pt.), managed to find open teammates, dishing out 7 assists. He also scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for good measure. Stephen Jackson added 15 points, connecting on 3-4 from downtown. Happel says his dominance, and his team's dominance, is really all about playing for each other, "It's really quite easy when you have teammates like mine and a coaching staff like the one we have here. When all the pieces fall into place like that, scoring the points just becomes a formality."
Just when you thought it was safe to go into the lane... Happel reminds you whose house it is
The Hornets had five players score in double-figures. However, nobody scored more than 20 points. Marcus Thornton had a team high 18 points and collected 8 rebounds. Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza also played well on the glass, grabbing 9 and 10 boards, respectively. That helped keep the rebounding total close, though Orlando outrebounded New Orleans 53-49. The Hornets bench also outperformed the Magic, scoring 35 points to just 13 for Orlando. Still, Chris Paul afterwards talked about that fateful, and dreadful, third quarter, "We just couldn't throw the ball into the ocean that quarter. It wasn't so much that they were outplaying us, as much as it was we couldn't make any shots. You've got to score the ball to win, and we just didn't get it done."
Hornets Forward Trevor Ariza waves goodbye as Happel blows by him for the dunk
Most of the stats were close, if not even favoring New Orleans at times. The Hornets shot better from behind the arc, hitting 40% of its long range bombs, while Orlando only went 6-18. But, overall shooting the basketball, the Magic were much better, hitting on 48%. New Orleans only made 36% of its shots from the floor. Orlando must now go on the road, traveling to Indiana to take on the Pacers. The Magic are certainly heading into this one hot, having won four in a row now.
