ORLANDO LACKS MAGIC TOUCH, LOSES SEASON OPENER
Washington, D.C. (AP) - The champs had a tough start to the season, losing in a big way on the road against Washington. Orlando struggled throughout, and the Wizards were simply too hot offensively, blowing out the Magic 111-91 in the season opener for both teams. Orlando was only down by three points at halftime. But, Washington outscored the Magic 29-15 in the third quarter to put this one out of reach.
Happel got things started right for Orlando with this early dunk
Magic forward Brian Happel came to play, scoring 36 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. However, he did struggle a bit more from the field than he is accustomed to, shooting 16-28 from the field and just 1-4 from long distance. Andray Blatche contributed a double-double in his first game with Orlando, scoring 14 points and collecting 11 rebounds. Dwight Howard also had a double-double with 13 points and 14 boards. Gilbert Arenas did not shoot the ball well, going 2-10 from the field (1-7 from behind the arc), but he did find his teammates all night, dishing out 12 assists.
Happel was pumped to start the season, but he certainly wasn't feeling that way after his team lost by 20
Washington had a very balanced attack. Six Wizards scored in double figures. One of the biggest stats of the game: the bench play. Washington outscored Orlando 46-6. Archie Bremer led the attack for the Wizards, scoring 21 points on 8-16 shooting. John Wall also nearly had a triple double, with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 13 assists.
VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: HAPPEL'S HIGH-FLYING ATTACK
The regular season may just be getting underway, but Orlando is not messing around. Brian Happel was among those who wanted to fix the team's problems right away, "Me and a couple of the other guys decided to call a players only meeting, and we basically laid out what went wrong and what we need to do to fix it. None of us want to be losing games like that." Up next for Orlando - another road contest, this time in Charlotte. Then, the Magic come back to Orlando for their home opener, where they'll raise their NBA Championship banner and get their rings.
