ORLANDO BURNS HEAT, TAKES OVER TOP SPOT IN THE EAST
Orlando, FL (AP) - The Magic control their own destiny, at least when it comes to the number one seed in the East. A 101-88 win at home against rival Miami put Orlando alone in the top spot. If Orlando wins at Atlanta on Friday night, the Magic will clinch the number one seed and face Cleveland in the first round of the playoffs. Orlando used a huge second quarter to pull out in front of the Heat by halftime. The Magic outscored Miami 36-18 in the second frame, with Orlando hitting on 65% of its shots. The Heat were ice cold in that quarter, shooting a dismal 28% from the field. Miami outscored the Magic 31-21 in the third quarter to get within 5. But, Orlando quickly pulled ahead in the fourth and never gave up the lead.
LeBron's Heat had a tough night, as Happel may have helped swat away Miami's chances at a number 1 seed
Star forward Brian Happel bolstered his case for MVP, scoring 30 points and grabbing 18 rebounds (including 15 boards in the first half). Happel went toe-to-toe with LeBron, who had 32 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. It was one of those games where the stars cancelled themselves out, and Happel knew his teammates had to focus on stopping the other guys, "Sure we had some plans going in to try to limit LeBron's effectiveness, but when a guy that good is going off, all that goes out the window. At a certain point, you just figure he's going to get his, and you focus on stopping the other guys on the team instead."
Being surrounded didn't bother Happel, as he still put it down hard in traffic
Gilbert Arenas was one of four Orlando players to score in double-figures. Arenas had 18 points and dished out 7 dimes. Dwight Howard and Brandon Bass pulled in 8 boards a piece. Howard also got 4 blocked shots. Orlando's defense was key, holding Dwayne Wade to just 16 points and Chris Bosh with just 13 points on 6-15 shooting.
Miami's "Big 3" could only watch as Happel and his Magic tore through the Heat
Orlando has now won 9 games in a row and 17 out of their last 18. The Magic finish their regular season on the road against Atlanta, which is playoff bound with a 47-34 record. But, the Hawks have struggled as of late, going 5-5 in their last 10 games.
