New York Jets - Weekly Update #6
(Jetsblog.com)
Recap of Chiefs at Jets:
As a lifelong Jets fan, I have to say that had to be one of the most painful games I've seen this team play in the past decade. Kellen Clemens went out there and played like he hadn't looked over the playbook once. Five interceptions? C'mon. It's games like these that make me miss our quarterback in exile. It'll be a bumpy road through the end of the season, but we'll bounce back next year.
Preview of Jets at Bills:
The Jets will march into Buffalo this weekend and try to beat the Bills on their turf. I'm nervous for this game. The Bills haven't been playing too bad-a football lately. Whereas the Jets have been encompassed by drama and change. It should be interesting to see how this game pans out.
College Football:
Instead of talking about positions and players and whatnot, I've decided that for this week, we're going to spotlight a player that has been mentioned here, and take a more in-depth look at him.
Michael Shields out of UCLA seems to be a gamble pick for most fans and experts. Last year when starting Senior Ben Olson went down for a few games, Michael Shields, a junior then, stepped in and commanded the offense with expertise. In just four games he threw for over 1000 yards, seven touchdowns, no interceptions, and a pass completion of 76%. Those are great numbers for over four games, especially when the quarterback has taken limited snaps. This year though, has taken a different route from the success we saw from him last year.
This year, he was introduced to a new offensive system. No longer did he have Coach McCullen calling his plays for him, meeting with him for workouts or anything of that nature. Now he had someone new taking the reigns. Being handed the starting job out of the gate, he's played decently this year. His play has approached nowhere near the success he had in last year's campaign, but it's been passable.
The big question right now, is whether New York Jets Coach Lou McCullen would take the risk on Shields. To some it doesn't seem to be a risk at all. Shields is familiar with the system McCullen runs, and his supporters see him as a perfect fit who could make this team run the way it should. His detractors, however, note his lack of true arm strength, and his failure to develop to change could be an issue.
Right now Michael Shields is slated to go in the second round, and possibly fall to the third. New York has noted interest in him, but the question remains, will they risk it?
Closing Thoughts:

Week 7: Jets vs Raiders:
This was Kellen Clemens big game. His chance to show up and prove that he could take the wheel and drive this offense. And honestly, I can't help but walk away from this game feeling a little disappointed.
Kellen Clemens went 15-30, with a touchdown and two interceptions.
Miss Chad Pennington yet? You should.
The Oakland Raiders walked into this game with a staggering 0-5 record, being the most feared team of any junior college out there. And the Jets almost dropped the ball against them today.
The Raiders are one of those teams you put on your schedule and say, "Okay, there's no way we can lose this game." So, to go out there and come close to losing, it's almost inexcusable in my eyes. I look to the bench and see no Chad Pennington waiting in the wings. This game was full of many "face palms" for Jets fans.
Hopefully next week he can get it together as the Chiefs come into New York to take on our boys.

Jets End Chad Pennington's Season, Place Him on IR
Last Sunday we saw the Chad Pennington Era effectively come to an end in New York. Pennington left coaches and players baffled at his decision to take an extended leave of absence from the team, refusing to take another snap. Granted, Pennington has had to deal with an unusual amount of criticism from the fans, but why Pennington would choose to overreact in such a manner is beyond us.
"Chad made a decision. Was it the decision I would make? Probably not. Players have to deal with the fans, and we know that sometimes fans can be a little looney," Head Coach Lou McCullen said in an interview with CBS Sports, "I haven't talked to him since Sunday night. As far as I know, he's at his beach house in Florida with his phone unplugged. Hopefully he's satisfied."
When asked about what the plans were for the team as far as his future went, McCullen said they'd most likely seek to trade him.
"Whether we cut him or trade him, we're taking a cap hit. So we may as well just bite the bullet and get what we can for him, which at this point might not be very much."

New York Jets - Weekly Update #5
(Jetsblog.com)
Thoughts on Bengals vs Jets:
Honestly, as much as I dislike Chad Pennington, it's a shame to see him go out in such a manner. He's not a bad person, and doesn't deserve to have beer thrown on him. It was a classless move, and it makes our fan base look classless. Hopefully Chad ends up somewhere in the NFC, like with Carolina or something, where he can be out of our hair, and still have a good productive rest of his career. He'll never be a Jet again, that's for sure. Oh, and did you know Laverneus Coles got injured in this game? Yeah, he did.
Preview of Jets vs Raiders:
Chad Pennington is out, Kellen Clemens is in. It's going to be one interesting game out there. Personally, I think there will be some growing pains for Kellen. He's got the potential to possibly lead this team to a 10-6 record or something. He won't set the league on fire and be the toast of the town, but he won't screw things up for us. Had the Jets known this was going to happen though, they might have waited until the offseason to trade TJ?
College Games: This week's topic of debate - Runningbacks
Me: When I think of a back that fills the bill for the New York Jets, I think Scotty Barry out of Washington State. Now, this guy won't win any foot races by any means. But he's got raw power and size, and is very durable. The Jets don't run the ball often, but when they do, it's either when the pass isn't working, or when they're on the goal line. When the pass isn't working, they run, and run, and run. And the runningbacks get tired. Scotty Barry won't get tired.
Ryan L: Joey Keller out of Illinois is one of the featured backs of this year's draft, and for all the right reasons. Keller is fast, really, really fast. And he's also got hands. Really, really good hands. Thomas Jones was traded because he didn't fit the system. Joey Keller fits the system. Joey Keller isn't an every down back. He has injury issues, so running him every down would be disastrous. He's a solid, fast, pass-catching runningback. That's what the Jets need.
Nathan H: Looking over this list of runningbacks, no one really jumped out at me. I wasn't overwhelmed by anyone, really. This isn't a runningback draft. The power lies in quarterbacks this year, it's that simple. But I did see one back's name that made me do a double take. That's the name of LeRon James. The speed demon out of NAU looks like he could be a whole heap of trouble for opposing defenses. LeRon is the kind of player you could have split carries with a veteran, or a power back. He'd be a phenom at playing the slot. He's simply a big fish in a small pond over at NAU.
Joe B: I like character players. They tend to last longer in this league, deal at reasonable prices, and they stick by you. That's where Marqueis Snell comes in. The guy is a class act. Does he have durability and size issues? Sure. But he's fast, lightning fast. And He has character that can't be matched. He's easily the nicest, most level headed player in the past five drafts.
Closing Thoughts:
I like the direction this team is heading. We're systematically removing the pieces that don't quite fit for this team, and the Jets look like they're going to be the team to beat within the next five years. A Super Bowl may be out of reach this year, but who knows what tomorrow will hold?

Week 6: Bengals vs Jets
This week's game was marred by controversy, sadly. Out in the Meadowlands, fans showed their disapproval of Chad Pennington throughout the game, even after 3 TDs and a clear stated dominance over the Bengals.
Now, as professionals, players often have to deal with criticism and complaints. Chad Pennington has bore the weight of the dismay of an entire fan base. It seems the former Comeback Player of the Year can't impress anyone out in New York.
Finally, things came to a head when Chad Pennington came to the sidelines after throwing an interception in the first half. Now, normally when quarterbacks trot to the sideline, they convene with the coaches and that's the end of it. This time though, a fan actually jumped the guard railing and made it far enough to throw his beer on Pennington and yell, "Get out of New York!" followed by some expletives that won't be repeated.
Pennington kept his cool and stayed in the game, and actually finished quite well statistically. But at the post game press conference, things hit the fan (which is what a lot of non-Jets fans think Chad should have done, "hit the fan").
"To be totally honest with you, I'm sick of it. I'm sick of this city, and the fans that don't appreciate me. I've tried to stick it out here for years now, and no matter what, I can't seem to get any support. This year has been the worst," Pennington interrupted people who tried to calm him down, "if these fans can't get a grip and see that they have a good thing going, fine. That's on them. I'm taking an extended leave of absence from this team indefinitely, and I expect to be either traded or released before the draft."
He then got up, left the room to stunned silence, including Coach Lou McCullen being dumbfounded at his quarterback's outburst.
"Well, he's thrown himself to the wolves now. He's just alienated himself from the city of New York. He can never wear a Jets uniform again."

New York Jets - Weekly Update #4
(Jetsblog.com)
Cardinals vs Jets Recap:
You've got to hand it to the Cardinals, they played ballsy football this week and beat us at our own game (coming back in the fourth). I've heard a lot of Jets fans say that we beat ourselves and all this nonsense, and it's simply not true. Even if we make crucial errors, the Cardinals still have to follow through with the opportunity, which they did this week. Congrats to them.
Jets vs Bengals Preview:
Sunday's game looks to be a lot of fun to watch as the Bengals take on the Jets. Chad Ochocinco is one of my personal favorites to watch and I think it should be interesting to see what he has in store for us. I fully expect the Jets to win this game, as the Bengals don't really have much of a defense. Their offense might surprise us, though.
College Games:
I've decided to reformat how we do our college football overview. From this point forward we're going to separate it into four analysts, myself being one. Each analyst will talk about their favorites, and what they feel the likelihood is of that player ending up on the Jets.
Me: Personally, I like Biff Below. We all know that. I think he's one of the most underrated players in this year's class. He could be a big difference maker for this team and a franchise quarterback.
Ryan L: With the Jets acquiring a 4th round draft pick not too long ago, don't be surprised to see the Jets grab a running back in the later rounds. I have inside sources that say Chuck Potter of UNC, J.T. Reed of Ga. Southern, LeRon James of NAU and Demarcus Lincoln of Texas are the early front-runners to be taking the workload in New York. LeRon James is my personal favorite to be the next big thing in New York. The Jets run a pass-based offense, this is true. But adding the speedy LeRon James as a Brian Westbrook-esque back would add an entirely new dimension to this football team's offense.
Nathan H: This year's NFL draft is loaded with quarterbacks. The talent pool is VERY expansive. The last thing the Jets will do is blow their first round pick on a quarterback. Right now everyone sees the Jets pursuing Biff Below, Jack English and Dane Morrow. But a name that hasn't crossed anyone's mind, that you may very well be seeing on Sunday in a green and white uniform is that of Michael Shields. It's a completely logical choice. Not only does he have choice decision making skills and mobility, but he's from UCLA! Lou McCullen coached this quarterback. On his scouting report it mentioned him being a system quarterback, due to his floundering statistics this year after not having McCullen's passing system to go by. Well, fear not, Mike! Because being a system quarterback won't hurt you one bit if you're being drafted by the coach who uses the system!
Joe B: I'm almost in total agreement with Nathan's analysis. I do believe that the Jets will pick up Michael Shields. It's the ideal situation for both sides. I also agree that the Jets won't waste a first round pick on a quarterback. But with a 1st rounder left vacant, what do they use it on? I'll tell you what they use it on: a cornerback. Not just any cornerback either, I'm talking about Juran Riley. He'd be the perfect fit in New York, and here's why. Darelle Revis is very young, and is coming to his own in the NFL. This is the perfect time for the Jets to groom another young cornerback and develop that one-two punch on defense. With two extremely talented corners in the slot, no team would dare throw the ball on them. Then you have Michael Shields on offense reunited with his coach and system, which results in a profitable offense. Pick up a speedy wideout and a good halfback in the later rounds, and you've planted the seeds for success. Juran Riley, Coach McCullen, Juran Riley!
Closing Thoughts:
I was happy with the way the trade worked out for the team. Thomas Jones wasn't going to have any real impact for us, as we don't run the ball but a few times per game. So, it made more sense for the team to just get what they could for him, rather than have him hang around, be ineffective and disgruntled. Now more doors open up for us on draft day as we've got another pick to work with! I like the decisions Lou McCullen is making. Now, all we need to do is dump Chad Pennington and get a pick or two for him before he heads south. Public opinion is quickly turning against Chad, as they're starting to see that he simply isn't a fit for this franchise. Watch in the next few weeks as he seals his own fate.

****BREAKING NEWS****
Jets RB Thomas Jones Traded back to Chicago
It came across the wire this morning that New York's Thomas Jones will yet again be wearing blue and orange. Chicago, with mere days left to spare, made the move to acquire Thomas Jones from New York in exchange for a fourth round pick in this year's draft. In response to the news of the trade, head coach Lou McCullen issued this statement:
"Thomas Jones is a great player and a good person to boot. We made this move so that he might have the opportunity to get a heavier workload in a system that he would be more suited in. We appreciated having him here in New York, and he brings a lot to the table now for the city of Chicago, and we wish him the best of luck in all of his endeavors."
We knew McCullen would come in and rock the boat to some extent, but we had no idea he would trade away a Pro Bowl caliber running back for a mere 4th round pick.
The move really shouldn't be that big a of a surprise (even though it is). Jones was getting less than 15 carries per game, and has failed to eclipse 50 yards in the past three games. Now, three games is no indicator of a player's ability, especially since he went over 100 in week one against the Dolphins. But McCullen and the rest of Jets Nation knows that with possibly the most loaded draft in NFL history coming up this year, they need to stock up on picks.
The deed is done, and TJ is now a Chicago Bear yet again. Leon Washington will now most likely assume the starting role in New York, and fans across the nation wait to see how things will develop.

Week 4: Cardinals vs Jets
In yet another exciting finish, Kurt Warner captained the Arizona Cardinals from behind late in the fourth quarter to give Arizona its fourth consecutive win, leaving them in the Top 10 at 4-0.
"The Jets played solid football today, and they showed us what they've been showing everyone else all season. Today we just wanted it more," Coach Ken Whisenhunt said concerning the game today.
In truth, it was a great game. Thus far, New York has been able to keep almost every game competitive up until the final whistle blows (except for week one, of course). Jets fans have been critical of quarterback Chad Pennington as of late, seeing him as the wrong fit for their team.
"It always hurts to know the fans aren't exactly on your side," Pennington remarked, when asked about his low approval rating, "I'm here to do a job, and I'd like to think I'm doing the best I can. Hopefully I can show the fans that I'm not as bad as they'd like to think."
Kurt Warner was awarded the game ball today, for his heroics in the fourth quarter.
"It's never easy, having to come from behind like that. The Jets had done a really good job of limiting our pass game out there, and it didn't stop on that drive either," Warner said, "we were very fortunate on some of our passes. You know those ones where you throw it and you cringe because you get that feeling that it's going to get picked off? Yeah, I threw a few of those on that drive. Luck definitely factored in today."
Next week the Buffalo Bills will go into Glendale to take on the Cardinals, while the Jets get an extra week to reflect on this week's game as they have a bye before their game against Chad Ochocinco and the Cincinnati Bengals.

New York Jets - Weekly Update #3
(Jetsblog.com)
Jets vs Chargers Recap:
What a contest! The gang really stepped up on Sunday and brought the pain. Thomas Jones knocked down the door of the house three times, which backs up my claim that the running games would come out to play. LT and Darren Sproles combined for over 30 carries, and Thomas Jones scampered for three touchdowns. One might argue that neither backs finished over 100 yards, but honestly, does that really matter?
Cardinals vs Jets Preview:
This game makes me nervous. I don't see the Cardinals as a solid team right now, and I think the Jets see that as well. Which concerns be, because they'll take them for granted this week, I feel. Now I could be totally wrong. New York could go out there and blow them out 40-0 on Sunday, but I expect the Cardinals to be a little more formidable than that. Keep a close eye on this game.
College Games:
How about that Biff Below!? This guy continues to impress me. He's being touted as a Top 10 pick already, and in my personal opinion, I see him being the most effective quarterback to come out of this draft. You can have your Jack English and your Dane Morrows. Give me Biff Below!
As for other players we noticed this weekend, Jamarion Bellows. He appears to be a bit of a sleeper so far. No teams have really taken any notice because he's from such a small school. He's got great speed and hands though, I think if the Jets find themselves with little option in the later rounds, and he's still available, they should take him.
Closing Thoughts:
I really should just rename this section to "I don't like Chad Pennington", honestly. He's not the right quarterback for this team. In a perfect world, we would trade him before the trade deadline and get some late picks for him or something. He could be useful to a team like Miami or Buffalo, where they don't live and die by passing the ball. He's a very smart quarterback, and is good at managing games. He simply doesn't fit here in New York. I get emails every week telling me that I need to stop bashing on Chad, because he's put up phenomenal numbers every week so far. Look at his mistakes though, look at the interceptions. Key interceptions at awful moments. People wonder why we can't get our act together until the 4th quarter, well, here's a hint: it's all in their heads. That's right, I said it. Look at the film. The Jets start to gain momentum early, and Pennington throws a pick. That throws them off all game and they don't get their heads screwed on right until the 4th quarter. It's all speculation, but the logic is flawless.
In short, TRADE CHAD PENNINGTON.

Week 3: Chargers vs Jets
Now that this week's game is finished, we can all breathe a deep sigh of relief. If the Jets make every week this interesting, then ticket holders will start dropping left and right of heart attacks! Last week we witnessed the Jets make a comeback with an aerial assault that was backed by great defensive play. This week was a little more shaky.
We could go into what the Jets did wrong, and what the Chargers should have done. We aren't here to nitpick the game though. At the end of the day, Chad Pennington and the boys tiptoed out of San Diego with a win.
"I didn't play to the best of my ability today, it's true," Pennington said after the game, "it definitely wasn't a good game for me or this team. But we got the win. It was sloppy, it was messy, it wasn't a textbook victory, but we won."
You've got that right, Chad.
Thomas Jones should be at least a little bit happier this week. Although he only got 11 carries (less than last week's total, which was bad enough by itself), he did manage to visit the endzone three times. On the other side, LaDainian Tomlinson managed to scrape up 96 yards on 20 carries. 20 carries? T.J. must have a nasty taste in his mouth seeing Tomlinson get that many carries.
In the eyes of many, New York should have walked away with this game. The Chargers were running a very predictable offensive scheme, and on defense they were dropped into "Cover 3" literally every time. Jets fans around the nation are happy with the outcome of the game, but the path to the end result is what has us worried.
"Of course you don't want your team deciding to kick into gear in the fourth quarter of every game," Coach Lou McCullen admitted at the post game press conference, "living on the edge like that will beat you more times than you will it. We've got some bumps to smooth over, and gaining early momentum is clearly on our "to do" list."

New York Jets - Weekly Update #2
(Jetsblog.com)
Patriots vs Jets Recap:
Our boys in green and white put on quite a show for us this week when the Patriots came into town! Granted, it leaves a bittersweet taste in our mouth knowing that our impressive comeback in the 4th quarter reminded every Jets fan of a Mr. Vinny Testaverde and the "Miracle at the Meadowlands", but couldn't result in a Jets victory. The amount of heart our boys showed on Sunday proved to me, at least, that the Jets are just one or two small roster moves from being a nightmare to face.
Jets vs Chargers Preview:
This week's game should definitely be fun to watch as the Jets and Chargers clash horns. Both teams have potent offenses, and with the kind of performances the Jets have given us, why wouldn't we get excited for this game? Personally, I feel the running games for both sides will be unleashed for this contest. Thomas Jones was visibly frustrated after last week's game, and LT is out to prove that all of his haters are simply misinformed for considering him to be "washed up".
College Games:
All of our analysts decided this week, almost unanimously, that Biff Below would be the perfect fit for the New York Jets. We know, it's only September, but it's never too early to speculate! We've been extremely impressed him as well as Kelly James. Prince Justin and Mack Johnson really turned our heads this weekend as well. Mack Johnson fits right in with Coach McCullen's MLB philosophy of a big hitter/blitzing type of 'backer.
Closing thoughts:
Lou McCullen stood up to the most talented team in the NFL on Sunday, and almost snuck away with the victory. It's no secret that I, and many other of my collegues are not what you would call "supporters" of Chad Pennington. I can't help but be critical of his performance this week. Many weren't able to see the game televised this week, so they missed Chad Pennington's key interceptions and blunders. One might argue that when a quarterback throws 63 passes in a game, that he's bound to make mistakes and throw interceptions. Personally, I disagree. Being able to thrive when the weight is on your shoulders is what seperates the men from the boys. Chad Pennington is a boy. Lou McCullen is a smart guy, and understands that his team needs a strong-armed, strong-willed quarterback. Which is why I can say with all confidence that if this isn't Chad's last season wearing the green and white, it's certainly his last season as a starter.

Week 2: Jets vs Patriots
Well, week two is in the books, and much to the dismay of Jets fans around the country, their team fell just short of victory in overtime.
One can't help but be impressed with the amount of heart showed by the New York Jets, though. After the 30 yard field goal by Gostowski in the 4th quarter, the Jets seemed completely out of the game, down 24-2. It was at this point that head coach Lou McCullen changed up his game plan entirely.
Convening with Chad Pennington on the sidelines before the next offensive drive, Pennington recalled Coach McCullen's advice at the post game press conference. "Well, the Pats had just kicked that field goal in the 4th and coach comes over to me and says, 'Chad, how's your arm feeling?' I said, 'I can throw some more, why?' and he smiles and replies, 'Because we're not running the ball again for the rest of the game," Pennington said, laughing.
What he didn't expect though, was that McCullen was serious. Pennington had, at that point, thrown about 40 passes. A very good amount for any quarterback. Little did he know that he would be adding 23 more to that number. Yes, we said 23.
The result of this new strategy was an improbable 22-point comeback to force overtime. Now, the offense can't take all the credit here. The Jets first touchdown of the game came with 8:17 left in the contest. That means that the defense had to play a huge role in this comeback, and they did. They fought hard up until the final whistle blew.
In the end, the Jets fought hard and nothing to be ashamed of. Well, Thomas Jones does, actually. Averaging 2.9 yards a carry on 10 carries is probably something he won't want to write home to mom about. The running game was absolutely pathetic. But then again, no one ever said Coach McCullen was a run game specialist.
