NFL Draft, Day 1 Recap: New York Jets
(Jetsblog.com)

Day 1 is in the books as the first 64 picks have come and gone. Right now it appears the New York Jets have had the hot hand through the first two rounds, drafting studs Juran Riley and Mack Jackson to pad a defense in dire need of playmakers.

Jackson comes from New Mexico, and is simply a nightmare for opposing offenses. This guy can stop the run, stop the pass, and will mutilate your quarterback if you give him the opportunity. He has an endless motor and is an incredibly hard hitter. The fact that he fell as far as he did this year was a Godsend for Jets fans everywhere.

Juran Riley is the phenom from Texas that was largely overlooked by teams in favor of Raheem Jordan from Oklahoma. Riley is largely a ballhawk and a solid hitter that will serve New York best by moving him to the safety position. By jumping up and grabbing him they showed their assertiveness in a draft that has been largely unpredictable this year.

On the offensive side of the ball, Chuck Potter out of North Carolina, Biff Below from Florida, and Peter Bayless from Minnesota were picked up in Day 1.

Below, who most consider to be a calculated risk and possibly the biggest bust of the draft, comes to New York due to trade. He'll be handed the keys to one of the most fertile teams in the league, paired with a pass-friendly coach. This will either lead to great success, or disaster.

Chuck Potter of North Carolina is a speedy running back that is a good pass-catcher. He's not an every-down back, but that's alright considering the fact that the Jets run very rarely (although we saw the run game make a surge through the last 5 games of the season). If used properly, he'll make great contributions to an already talented Jets squad.

Peter Bayless is one of those picks that will make you stop and scratch your head for a second. McCullen could have possibly waited until the fourth or fifth round to pick Bayless up, but he made it clear that he wanted him, and showed it by passing over multiple other playmakers to grab him. Bayless has great acceleration and is great at making the spectacular catch. He's the deep threat that McCullen needs to execute his passing attack.

Day 2 of the draft will be set to begin tonight at 5 p.m. Central, and will take us from rounds three to seven. There are several great players still available out there, and for once the later rounds should be just as interesting to watch as the early rounds.
