Week 6: Bengals vs Jets
This week's game was marred by controversy, sadly. Out in the Meadowlands, fans showed their disapproval of Chad Pennington throughout the game, even after 3 TDs and a clear stated dominance over the Bengals.
Now, as professionals, players often have to deal with criticism and complaints. Chad Pennington has bore the weight of the dismay of an entire fan base. It seems the former Comeback Player of the Year can't impress anyone out in New York.
Finally, things came to a head when Chad Pennington came to the sidelines after throwing an interception in the first half. Now, normally when quarterbacks trot to the sideline, they convene with the coaches and that's the end of it. This time though, a fan actually jumped the guard railing and made it far enough to throw his beer on Pennington and yell, "Get out of New York!" followed by some expletives that won't be repeated.
Pennington kept his cool and stayed in the game, and actually finished quite well statistically. But at the post game press conference, things hit the fan (which is what a lot of non-Jets fans think Chad should have done, "hit the fan").
"To be totally honest with you, I'm sick of it. I'm sick of this city, and the fans that don't appreciate me. I've tried to stick it out here for years now, and no matter what, I can't seem to get any support. This year has been the worst," Pennington interrupted people who tried to calm him down, "if these fans can't get a grip and see that they have a good thing going, fine. That's on them. I'm taking an extended leave of absence from this team indefinitely, and I expect to be either traded or released before the draft."
He then got up, left the room to stunned silence, including Coach Lou McCullen being dumbfounded at his quarterback's outburst.
"Well, he's thrown himself to the wolves now. He's just alienated himself from the city of New York. He can never wear a Jets uniform again."
