Week 3: Chargers vs Jets
Now that this week's game is finished, we can all breathe a deep sigh of relief. If the Jets make every week this interesting, then ticket holders will start dropping left and right of heart attacks! Last week we witnessed the Jets make a comeback with an aerial assault that was backed by great defensive play. This week was a little more shaky.
We could go into what the Jets did wrong, and what the Chargers should have done. We aren't here to nitpick the game though. At the end of the day, Chad Pennington and the boys tiptoed out of San Diego with a win.
"I didn't play to the best of my ability today, it's true," Pennington said after the game, "it definitely wasn't a good game for me or this team. But we got the win. It was sloppy, it was messy, it wasn't a textbook victory, but we won."
You've got that right, Chad.
Thomas Jones should be at least a little bit happier this week. Although he only got 11 carries (less than last week's total, which was bad enough by itself), he did manage to visit the endzone three times. On the other side, LaDainian Tomlinson managed to scrape up 96 yards on 20 carries. 20 carries? T.J. must have a nasty taste in his mouth seeing Tomlinson get that many carries.
In the eyes of many, New York should have walked away with this game. The Chargers were running a very predictable offensive scheme, and on defense they were dropped into "Cover 3" literally every time. Jets fans around the nation are happy with the outcome of the game, but the path to the end result is what has us worried.
"Of course you don't want your team deciding to kick into gear in the fourth quarter of every game," Coach Lou McCullen admitted at the post game press conference, "living on the edge like that will beat you more times than you will it. We've got some bumps to smooth over, and gaining early momentum is clearly on our "to do" list."
