Week 2: Jets vs Patriots
Well, week two is in the books, and much to the dismay of Jets fans around the country, their team fell just short of victory in overtime.
One can't help but be impressed with the amount of heart showed by the New York Jets, though. After the 30 yard field goal by Gostowski in the 4th quarter, the Jets seemed completely out of the game, down 24-2. It was at this point that head coach Lou McCullen changed up his game plan entirely.
Convening with Chad Pennington on the sidelines before the next offensive drive, Pennington recalled Coach McCullen's advice at the post game press conference. "Well, the Pats had just kicked that field goal in the 4th and coach comes over to me and says, 'Chad, how's your arm feeling?' I said, 'I can throw some more, why?' and he smiles and replies, 'Because we're not running the ball again for the rest of the game," Pennington said, laughing.
What he didn't expect though, was that McCullen was serious. Pennington had, at that point, thrown about 40 passes. A very good amount for any quarterback. Little did he know that he would be adding 23 more to that number. Yes, we said 23.
The result of this new strategy was an improbable 22-point comeback to force overtime. Now, the offense can't take all the credit here. The Jets first touchdown of the game came with 8:17 left in the contest. That means that the defense had to play a huge role in this comeback, and they did. They fought hard up until the final whistle blew.
In the end, the Jets fought hard and nothing to be ashamed of. Well, Thomas Jones does, actually. Averaging 2.9 yards a carry on 10 carries is probably something he won't want to write home to mom about. The running game was absolutely pathetic. But then again, no one ever said Coach McCullen was a run game specialist.
