A New Sun Rises in New York: The Hiring
Posted on April 7, 2010 at 12:13 AM.

People flocked into the cramped media room as Jets owner, Woody Johnson stood firmly behind his podium, answering questions before announcing his decision on who he chose to coach his team into the future.

At exactly 9:12 a.m. EST, Johnson announced that Lou McCullen, the highly touted UCLA offensive coordinator who was the brains behind the "Gold and Blue Bombardment" (the nickname given to the UCLA Bruins' deadly passing game), would be wearing an NFL headset this year.

"I know you don't see many college coaches, much less and college coordinators head to the NFL, and we're taking a calculated risk by hiring him," Johnson said, "But after seeing what he did for UCLA and their offense, hell, their whole team, how could we not at least roll the dice and see what would happen?"

For those unaware, in 2007, McCullen took UCLA's offense to the top of college football. Ben Olson was a force to be reckoned with, as he threw for over 3500 yards and 20 touchdowns. UCLA's defense was their Achilles Heel, however, as the team would only win 8 games in 2007.

"I feel good about the move," said McCullen, when asked about any feelings of nervousness he might have, "I feel like I accomplished what I intended to at UCLA, and that was to improve their offense. Now I'm taking the driver's seat here in New York, and you can expect things will be different."
