The mariners are a game out of 1st in the west and currently hold the second wild card.
After ZERO trades in April and May, trades finally took place in June. There were two in total.
One was the Athletics trading SS/2B Nick Punto, and 1B Matt Olson (AA) B POT (84) for 2B Neil Walker of the Pirates.
Walker was hitting .257 with 11 HR and 33 RBI. He fits nicely in their lineup due to their need at 2B with Callaspo/Sogard struggling. Punto serves as depth and Matt Olson could possibly be the future 1B in Pittsburgh.
The other trade That occurred in June was the Rays picking up an elite Leadoff hitter, as Desmond Jennings was hitting .214 and was placed on the bench.
They traded 21 year-old SP (low B) Blake Snell (AA) to Kansas City for OF Jarrod Dyson. Dyson is hitting .323 with a high OBP and 16 stolen bases. He goes directly in the leadoff spot while Blake Snell reports to AA Montgomery.
In Mariners news, their #3 Prospect 1B DJ Peterson has been called up to AA Jackson. So far in AA he's hitting .300 with 2 HR and 10 RBI in 18 G. He joins other top prospects like Patrick Kivelhan, Austin Wilson, Julio Morban, Ketel Marte, Lars Huijer, and Tyler Pike
In pitching news, Andrew Carraway has been tearing up AA and has been given a promotion to AAA to start July. He's pitched to a 10-2 record with 77 SO and a 2.38 ERA. To accommodate, we sent down Jordan Pries (C pot) as he's been struggling in the AAA rotation.
Here are the Mariners MLB stats through three months into the season:
Lineup:
1. CF Austin Jackson:
.249, 8 HR, 33 RBI, 8 SB
He's gotten his AVG up, but I'd be willing to see less homers and more doubles and triples.
2. RF Michael Saunders:
.272, 9 HR, 28 RBI, 5 SB
He's been one of our best hitters. I'd like to see him steal more and possible be a 20/20 guy by the end of the season.
3. 2B Robinson Cano
.306, 15 HR, 47 RBI, 7 SB,
He's gotten his avg up every month this season. I'd like to see him improve it even more once August rolls around.
4. DH Kendrys Morales:
.209, 14 HR, 46 RBI
His average had climbed over .200, so I'll take the good power numbers.
5. 3B Kyle Seager:
.288, 17 HR, 46 RBI, 2 SB
He's been very consistent all season. Should make the all star team.
6. 1B Logan Morrison:
.231, 9 HR, 24 RBI
He's taken over the full-time 1B job, and has good power numbers.
7. C Mike Zunino:
.217, 11 HR, 26 RBI
He's currently our best option so the low AVG will have to do for now.
8. LF Dustin Ackley:
.270, 10 HR, 28 RBI, 1 SB
He's definitely improved, and has taken the full time job in LF, moving Denorfia to the bench.
9. SS Brad Miller
.282, 9 HR, 20 RBI, 8 SB
he's held down the SS/#9 hitter position all season. He does have 14 errors already, however.
Bench:
1B/DH Corry Hart:
.195, 2 HR, 11 RBI
After splitting time with Logan Morrison he's been relegated to the bench. A future DFA could be heading toward his way.
C Humberto Quintero
.187, 0 HR, 1 RBI
He's barely played, but he might earn himself a DFA as well in July.
UTL Willie Bloomquist:
.204, 0 HR, 5 RBI
He's been bad, but he's only made 23 starts all year. He'll be fine. He's the only guy who can play for Kyle Seager on the 25-man roster right now.
LF/RF Chris Denorfia:
.212, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 4 SB
Despite hitting better than his other bench mates, he's frustrated me the most because he's played way more than all of them. He's on a short leash.
Pitching:
Felix: 11-2, 2.65 ERA, 120/27 K/BB
Kuma: 7-4, 1.99, 94/23 K/BB
Pax: 10-3 2.47 ERA, 102/39 K/BB
Elias: 4-8, 3.74 ERA, 99/33 K/BB
Young: 5-9, 6.58 ERA, 59/26 K/BB
Felix, Kuma, and Paxton are all making cases for making the all star team. Elias, despite the record (which doesn't matter) has a okay ERA so I'm giving him more time in MLB. I'm giving Chris Young a SHORT leash. He's making one start in July and if he doesn't lower his ERA them he will be sent to DFA'd and will most likely spend the rest of the year in AAA, if he isn't released.
Maurer: 1.29 ERA, 48 K
Beimel: 3.76 ERA, 19 K, 1/1 SV/SVO
Furbush: 4.33 ERA, 38 SO
Wilhelmsen: 2.33 ERA, 34 SO
Medina: 4.45 ERA, 37 SO, 0/3
Farquhar: 3.19 ERA, 34 SO, 3/3
Rodney: 1.32 ERA, 32 SO, 23/26
Rodney, and Maurer are all star candidates, and honestly they both should make it.
