Strive for Realism in Sports Games
Posted on October 2, 2011 at 10:55 PM.
As I play Madden 12 and NCAA 12, the one thing I always noticed and am annoyed by is the lack of the CPU AI using special moves like they should. They don't have the sense of trying to break down a defender during a 1 on 1 situation. Instead they just to run through everybody.

But as I play NBA 2K12 demo and watch all the retail youtube videos of fellow OSers, I noticed how the CPU AI uses their special moves. They spin, hesitation dribble, dribble behind the back, dribble between the legs, etc. Their vision of the whole court is presented very well.

They use the entire court when they have the ball. They try to break down the defender and not just automatically just go in a straight line like they do in the Madden and NCAA series.

IMO, no matter the sport, the CPU AI need to use their special moves just like a human controlled player would. How boring would MLB The Show be if nobody ever tried to steal a base, slide head 1st or feet 1st into base. How boring FIFA would be if nobody ever tried to a cross or header, spin move. How boring NHL would be if nobody ever tried to check anybody.

So why is it in the Madden and NCAA series for the longest now, they have gotten away with their CPU AI players not using their special moves ?

All sports games need to strive for realism. All CPU AI players should be doing the same things as they human controlled counter parts.

RIGHT! ....Thats all I can say, could go into saying how EA football has never been the innovative model for anything because theyre lazy uninspired unchallenged "corporate brats with college kids mentality" but that wouldne get anyone anywhere and wouldnt make a difference anyways, besides I dont know if thats 100 percent true, we have a new madden team with a new direction but in the past they just havent gotten the pulse of creating great sports games for whatever reason, its too bad.

All I will say is Amen and I completely agree with you! But Im done expecting anything from Madden! I am done! Hopefully 2k will make football games again some time in the future if not then oh well will just be buying baseball and basketball games! Im done with madden as I blogged weeks ago!

NBA players have more of a style in my opinon and 2k has gone to extremes to capture them. it may be a tech issue as there are 22 people playing at the same time on a football game but I would love a more unique feel playing different teams.

I don't buy the tech issue excuse of 22 players on the field. Considering soccer has 22 players on the field as well and both soccer games FIFA/PES managed to pull it off.

Also other football games were able to pull it off last generation of consoles as well. It can be done.

It's really bad in NCAA 12. The RBs just run through the hole and get tackled. You never notice a different style at all. That game has no personality.

I do notice the RBs in Madden are quite a bit better - at least the power runners. They use the stiff arm very well. I've got a couple videos of a cpu power back smoking me with them. Madden does struggle to emulate the quick back. I have seen Jamaal Charles and CJ try to spin and juke a little but they aren't that good at it either. Definitely something that can be improved.

At least the juke move works in Madden. NCAA 12 neutered almost all the special moves outside of the spin. The r-stick juke sucks, stiff arm sucks, truck sucks. No point in having the cpu try those moves since they all blow.

agreed. There shouldnt be an excuse. NFL2k5 did it in their NFL game, and I believe it was also done on old gen Madden games.

Yup alll these sports games are putting the EA american footbal brand to shame.
There shoudl be another shake up, at EA's Madden/NCAA division soon. Their incomplete games are seriously an issue. However, they might not care, cause every year EA football laughs all the way to the bank.
