Over all I must say this game has it's highs and lows. The high is that the single player is entertaining, story line is pretty good IF you are into consipiracy theories. Because this what the game plays as, one big conspiracy theory after another.
Multi player is re-done, more balanced. They have some new weapons, perks, modes, etc. And they made some previous weapons more powerful and some weaker.
Now on to the bad. This refers to single player. The game has this hollywood over the top type of stuff going on. It forces you to have 15 minute REAL LIFE TIME gun battles 2 or 3 times a level on EVERY LEVEL.
This in itself breaks up the realism of the game. You can kill everybody in an area and enemies will just respawn out of thin air in the same spot you just killed them in. This will make you pull your hair out because you can't advance when you want to advance, instead you just have to sit back, stay alive and let this 15 minute long gun battle play out.
Over all I must say the single player is a run n gun, RAMBO experience. Why you even got the exploding arrows from rambo. That being said once again this breaks up the realism of the game. On one hand the story line try to make you believe all this theories of what happened during the cold war.
But on the other hand, maybe it is because of my military special forces background, what black ops unit will go behind enemy lines shooting up the place. The game lacks stealth. Grant it in a couple of places stealth is required for about 3 minutes total, but 99.9% of the game is gun blazing.
Graphics are pretty good.......Sound is pretty good, not as good as Medal of Honor and Battlefield Bad Company 2 though. I mean when the bullets start flying in Black Ops, it doesn't make you feel like you in the middle of a fire fight.
Story line tries to have a plot twist, but it is so obvious that you will figure it out half way through the game. Solid buy for sure.
Over all I give this game a 8.5
Why ? Because of the enemy respawning in single player and the fact they force you to play out 15 minute long gun battles over and over and over again every mission. That is a little bit too much Hollywood for me.
And zombie mode.......That is a total cheese fest, they don't even look like zombies, they look more like the comic book character spawn, which to me made me laugh. I mean seriously they look so funny it will make you start laughing when you see them.
But in conclusion I beat the game on default in 10 hours, if it wasn't for the long drawn out gun battles in EVERY mission, this game would be a 6 or 7 hour game.
So in essence this game really is a short game that has drawn out missions to make it appear it is a much longer game then what it really is.

It is Treyarc though so I just expected some innovation, mostly for the Multi-player which here is a lot better than MW2. I'm very suprised there is not much stealth in the game since is set during the Cold War. Would've loved a lot of splinter cell moments.

COD has always forced you to advance in SP. You can't just sit back and wait, because the AI just respawns. Instead of waiting forever you have to run forward and push the action instead of sitting back. Although I havent played black ops, all the previous one have been the same in terms of SP.

Nope Black Ops is totally different, you CAN"T ADVANCE when you want to. It is like an invisible wall. Because for one in this game, in every level you have a person you got to FOLLOW. So therefore until they decide to move forward, you can't move forward. And they will just sit there for no reason, even if you kill everybody they will still sit there until this invisible timer goes off and they finally decide to move forward.

Black Ops makes me think back when I was a kid playing with my GI Joe's. It just has that old school Veitnam feel ya know. I like it better the MW2. The mulitplayer is not as fast paced. You have to move slower and camp more. Plus there is plenty more things to do like wager matches, combat training, theater, and all the MP things and stuff to mess with. I love this game.

I like what you guys are saying about MP. Like that they slowed it up a bit. Especially for us ol' timers. =]

I like aspects from all these shooters, but I've yet to see a complete one. The only thing I don't like about the MP, is that there really isn't any strategy involved. It's run, jump & shoot the whole way and movement were you can go is very scripted. It would've been nice if they brought the story line over to MP like in MOH and MW2.

??- I am an old timer and use to the mouse and keyboard set up. I have not really played a game like this on the ps3 for this reason. Is there anything new and better out there for the ps3 for the shoot em up games? Rather than the controller?

No just the controller. But they do have this game on the PC as well, so if you got a good enough graphics card, you might want to buy the PC version.

I'm looking forward to playing the game. It sucks that I gotta look forward to this 15 minute gun battle per level but it is what It is. Sucks about your Zombie report. I was looking forward to playing it once I unlocked it. I don't wanna spoil anything for folks but can you private message me about the characters in zombie mode you play with. Thanks....just want confirmation that it's true.

Skittles-
I thought the same thing haha. Honestly the MP in this game is like an episode of GI Joe, I'm loving the slower pace, and the new option to buy things...it takes out much of the "grinding" to level like in MW2. Both MW games annoyed me with their breakneck pace and sense of clutter online. Black Ops mp maps are wonderfully designed, weapons are balanced and have recoil, and the entire experience is a breath of fresh air in the COD franchise.

The MP may be better balanced and everything...
But the gun sounds, eww. I just can't get past it. Why on earth couldn't they use Infinity Wards audio assets.
At this point I feel like just getting through the singleplayer and trading it in, going back to MW2 for my MP fix. The main reason is I like the sound of the guns better, and to a lesser extent the graphics are shinier.
Silly reason I know, but if I'm not feeling the audio visual experience then balance kinda doesn't matter.
I believed the hype. Activision got my money. Well done, Activision.
All in all it's still a game made by the a sixth man forced into the role of franchise player. Sure it's fixed a lot of the issues of MW2, but it feels like World at War reskinned.
Don't get me wrong, Treyarch make very good games. (Kelly Slater Pro Surfer FTW!)
Infinity Ward's polish is (was) just on another level.

Please don't let my negativity effect your enjoyment of the game.
The only opinion that really matters is your own.
If you like/love it. Fantastic. More power to you.

Played 2hrs of single player and I am very satisfied with the game. I do feel like I'm in a movie, which is kinda exciting. Haven't noticed 15 minute shooting sequences though. I just pushed my way though the levels at my own pace.
Very happy with the buy.
