Week 1

Well, it has begun! The first week of the season is in the books. Thank you everyone who decided to come and check out my Madden 19 1978 NFL Season Remake. I have simulated the 14 games of the first week of the season and below are the results of each game:

New York Giants 24 (0-1) Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31 (1-0)
Houston Oilers 38 (0-1) Atlanta Falcons 44 (1-0)
Arizona Cardinals 28 (1-0) Chicago Bears 27 (0-1)
Washington Redskins 30 (0-1) New England Patriots 36 (1-0)
Minnesota Vikings 20 (0-1) New Orleans Saints 38 (1-0)
San Francisco 49ers 34 (1-0) Cleveland Browns 31 (0-1)
Los Angeles Rams 41 (1-0) Philadelphia Eagles 27 (0-1)
Kansas City Chiefs 31 (1-0) Cincinnati Bengals 27 (0-1)
Oakland Raiders 31 (1-0) Denver Broncos 20 (0-1)
Green Bay Packers 26 (1-0) Detroit Lions 19 (0-1)
Miami Dolphins 25 (0-1) New York Jets 48 (1-0)
San Diego Chargers 30 (0-1) Seattle Seahawks 33 (1-0)
Pittsburgh Steelers 24 (0-1) Buffalo Bills 31 (1-0)
Baltimore Colts 38 (1-0) Dallas Cowboys 28 (0-1)

Ok, so there were a few interesting things that came out of Week 1 and I’ll briefly fill you in:

Right off the bat, you may notice that the Bills upset the Steelers 31 to 24. No one, and I mean no one, saw that coming! Just like the real Buffalo Bills, we all had very low expectations for them. Sure, they will probably win a game here and there, but the Steelers were not one of the teams I expected them to beat.

Before the Bills & Steelers game, the Redskins & Patriots game was the first game to go into overtime this season, and as you can see, it ended with a touchdown from the Patriots. Obviously Madden has the updated overtime rules so who knows how this overtime would have gone back in 1978!

That was not the only game that went into overtime in week 1, we saw the Chargers and the Seahawks also go to overtime to decide a winner. If you were unaware, this is actually a division game! That’s right, the Seahawks were in the AFC West back in 1978. Things are going to get interesting as this season progresses!

Finally, the first Monday Night Football game of the season had the Baltimore Colts visit the Dallas Cowboys. It was a pretty close and good game overall and it ended with the Colts beating the Cowboys by 10 points with a final score of 38 to 28.

Thank you for reading my first post of the Madden 1978 season, and feel free to leave a comment, feedback, or opinions, and I’ll see all of you back here on Tuesday for the Week 2 recap!

P.S. I will try to remember to post the full schedule tomorrow in a sort of a "week 1.5" sort of thing. I'm also going to add in the current division standings for each week to make it easier to keep track of what's going on.
