Is South Carolina Here to Stay?
Posted on December 3, 2012 at 09:24 PM.
There is no question the hire of Steve Spurrier has paid off. Many called him crazy for taking the job. Why put a world class college resume on the line at a historically mediocre program? After a rocky start, things have come together.
Good coaching can make the difference between a close loss and a win. But at the end of the day it comes down to big time players making big time plays. A wise person once said "It’s not the X’s and O’s, it’s the Jimmys and Joes” The turn around at South Carolina started when Spurrier started convincing the top in state talent to stay home. The string of Mr. Footballs-- Stephon Gilmore, Marcus Lattimore, Jadaveon Clowney and Shaq Roland--has been an important piece of the puzzle.
Equally important has been the evolution of the Head Ball Coach. He has adapted his play calling to fit the strengths of his personnel. The "fun n gun" has become the "ground and pound." The formula for success is now run the ball and play punishing defense. While not always pretty it has been effective and the results speak for themselves: 1 SEC East Division title, beating the Dawgs and Vols 3 years in a row, beating the hated upstate rival 4 years in a row, the first 11 win season ever and a chance for 11 wins this year.
Only 2 questions remain. Will SC take the next big step and FINALLY win a SEC championship? And what happens when the HBC rides off into the sunset? To be continued.....
