Teamate Grades and Peripheral stats
Posted on February 11, 2012 at 05:24 PM.
A lot of people seem to struggle with teamate grades, winning games, and in general having positive impacts on the game beyond scoring.

While it's very fun to be able to score in any and all ways your player is always only going to be able to ever put the ball in the basket one way on any given posession. To some degree it's great to be able to hit a three and dunk but you can never do both at the same time.

A lot of people like to up every kind of scoring ability so that they can score anywhich way on the floor. What people can do instead if they have the skill is learn how to score in a few ways and learn how to create the opportunities that let them score that way. While of course EVERY stat is useful and it's always frustrating to miss any shot, if you focus on how you like to play you can spend skill points, at least early on, for the types of attributes that might help your teamate grade when you aren't scoring.

This obviuously deserves a whole breakdown and video tutorial and everything and unfortunately that's not going to happen here. Mid ranged shots, layups, ball security, free throws are all good places to start (big men being more inside shot, close, ball security, standing dunk). and then investing in an ability or two, expensive though they might be, as moves you know you like to do.

What I'm getting at here is I can get 4 or 5 offensive attributes up on a My Player and score 30+pts a game by getting into positions where THOSE attributes are used; all the same time someone else might have a dozen attributes in the 90s and score just as many points but score in every single way the game allows. Ultimately we're both scoring the same amount I'm just doing it my way instead of every way.

Eventually it's fun to do everything, but early on at least, learning how to score effectively your favorite way lets you use skill points on non-offensive attributes. What I'm getting at here is defense.

On Ball Defense, steal, defensive awareness. Most people only up their teamate grades on the offensive end of the ball. In particular scoring or assisting. But there are opportunities every time on defense to up your teamate grade and over the course of a game that really adds up.

First if you really struggle to get high grades you can "trap" the opposing teams ball handler as they cross half court. This double team up's your grade and is more effective the higher your defensive awareness, but beware you will probably need to recover to you man quickly if you aren't normally guarding the ball handler.

On ball defense not only helps keep guys in front of you but many people like to go for blocks every time their man shoots. Unless your block is very high (70+) this isn't really very effective, and I'm sure most of you have seen how when you block the person your guarding seems to hit a lot of shots. With on ball defense high if you are just near them, just close to the guy your guarding, when he shoots, it will give you a "good defense" boost to teamate grade.

Steals and blocks are great and with high values in those you can have huge impacts defensively. But boxing out is another way you can almost always up your teamate grade every time on that end of the floor.

With high traps, staying close to your guy and not touching anything but the left stick (no trying to block all the time!) and boxing out can give you three opportunities to up your teamate grade throughout the game. If you do that and learn to spend less skill points on offense than most other kids who play my player do you can get A+ grades VERY early on in your career. After a dozen games in you should be able to get A+ grades with focus on the defensive end and creating the right opportunities for yourself offensively.

Just the A+ gets you 1000 skill points and if you do key games thats 2000 before any goals or permformance bonuses are added in. Teamate grades and peripheral stats like awareness and defense may seem less sexy than scoring in every conceivable way but you'll get better faster. Then you can do whatever you want with those skill points...
