Since 2004 when the NFL and EA first came to it's exclusive agreement, thus killing off a very popular 2K Sports title, gamers worldwide have had no choice when it came to NFL gaming. With the recent development in the NCAA (and it's choice to end it's long license with EA) maybe gamers everywhere will see the NFL follow suit.
Does the NFL care? In 2004 probably not and let's face it when it comes down to it all the matters is the $$$ for all parties. Can the NFL stand to make more money if it so chooses to not renew the exclusive deal with EA? It's possible but behind the scenes both have been very happy with the deal.
In all likelihood next year Madden will once again be the only title we see on store shelves or for purchase online. Anyone who would get into the game now would need more than a year to develop a solid title for our NextGen consoles.
Gamers everywhere keep the slim hope they one day see the news that 2K Sports, Tecmo or someone new will release a new NFL game into the market. As an avid sports gamer over my lifetime I'd welcome some competition back onto the scene. I have not purchased or played a Madden title since 2010.
Perhaps the NextGen console games will put some life back into NFL gaming for me. I know having a choice other than Madden certainly would but I don't think we'll see that day anytime soon. At least until after the next EA/NFL exclusive deal comes to an end.
