Quick Hit Gaming Reviews
Posted on March 22, 2012 at 06:52 AM.
I have been playing a few new games here and there over the last few weeks, so needed a place to drop in a few quick reviews with my impressions of these titles. Gaming hasn't seemed to be too kind to me lately, so hopefully the rest of the year picks up greatly.

SSX (360)
Fun! Loved the scoreboard with friends and trying to beat them every time I logged in. I ended up with an incredible love/hate relationship with the game. As fun as it was, it was 10x more frustrating and annoying. I just felt the mountains, especially later in the game, were more designed to have you wreck than have fun on. I get it that it should be harder, but SSX and its sequel, Tricky, were designed for fun, tricks and racking up huge scores. This new SSX just didn't capture that charm in my opinion. A quick hit review of 6/10.

Street Fighter X Tekken (360)
Loved the idea, would rather see Street Fighter X Mortal Kombat, but this will do. In the first 10 minutes of play, I could feel how tight and well put together this title was. Blew Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and even Street Fighter 4 (Whatever incarnation they are now) away. A huge roster (won't even get into the disc locked content debate here) allows for a lot of getting to know you moments with the fighters. All tag matches, but I liked it how if one guy gets beat, it's over, you lose instead of the other guy hopping in ala Marvel vs. Capcom. The sheer amount of stats being kept as well for every fighter, every combo, and every online play mode is also insane. Online of course is a mixed bag with spammers and guys who are just better than anyone. Haven't run into any lag, but there's definitely a sound glitch (which has seemingly gotten better lately). One of, if not the, best fighter I've played in a long, long time. Even with its frustrations of being whooped online, it's still a solid quick hit 8.5/10.

MLB 2K12 (360)
I will make this known right away; I've never been a fan of 2K baseball. Even the Dreamcast versions were garbage in my eyes. I was always a big fan of All Star Baseball, High Heat, and MVP. I even preferred Triple Play to this series. The Show isn't an option as I don't own a PS3, and when I did (even with PS2 days) I just wasn't a fan of that game. So onwards to 2K12, it's a good game. Not great, not awful (as in years past). Best way to describe the game is that it's a full patch for 2K11. 2K12 is the most polished 2K to date, that doesn't equate to being a great game though. It has the fun factor and the game will be a fun baseball diversion. Still does many little things incorrectly, the graphics are subpar (although lighting is excellent this year), and the engine is old, but overall, like I said, it's fun. Quick hit score of 7/10.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (360)
This is the Resident Evil I always wanted, to play as the Umbrella team trying to clean up the outbreak. The game does deliver that, and it's not Resident Evil per say (but I guess I'm one of the few who didn't expect it to be RE), but something still feels off. The story just seems to be a little bit missing, I'm not finished with it yet (about half way through) but I'm disappointed that it doesn't fill in more gaps with Resident Evil 2 and 3. Almost seems as I should have replayed both recently just to get my memory straight. The feeling of rushing into a room with your squad, seeing a horde of zombies, and then having another government team in there also firing at the zombies as well as you is pretty damn fun though. Online is a blast, again, something about having 2 teams fighting and still having random zombies wandering around. Add to the fact you can become infected as well, joining the zombie-nation yourself. An early quick hit score of 7/10.

Disney Pixar: Rush (360)
I was very excited to play this with my son. He loves Kinect, and has had a ball playing the Kinect Sports games, Rabbids: Alive and Kicking, Happy Action Theater, Once Upon a Monster, etc., so a game with his favorite movie characters in it is a win win. Right? Right? Unfortunately, No. Simply put this game is a steaming pile of crap. Two hours, TWO FREAKING HOURS spent trying to get my son registered in the game. Couldn't do it, wouldn't pick him and myself up in the game. Why not? Every other Kinect title we've played hasn't had any issues with him. In fact games like Rabbids and Once Upon a Monster pick him up so good that he's playing them on his own without any adult help (mind you he's only 3).

So what's the deal here? Why do the games NOT coming out of Microsoft Studios seem to work better than the games coming from them? Anyway, this game is a total dud. I had a very disappointed child who couldn't even get registered to even play the game, so we never got to play. He could watch me play a level, but really, what's the fun in that for me or him. Lame game, lame attempt to cash in on the Disney/Pixar license, shameful how bad it is as you would expect it to be designed for kids, or am I wrong in that thought? Quick hit score of 1/10 (and that's being very generous).

Thanks for the thoughts. Good to read your gaming opinions in one place like this.

Glad to see you like MLB 2K. The Disney game sounds horrible. Disney Universe wasn't bad but should have been a lot better.
