The Tide jumped out to an quick 17-0 lead before an interception gave the Rebels the ball deep in Bama territory, where WR Phillip Payne ran it in of the WR Reverse with just under 30 seconds left in the half to make it 17-7.
The misfortune did not stop there for Greg McElroy, who had a forgetful day with 3 interceptions, despite throwing for over 290 yards and 3 TD. Rather than take the lead into halftime, McElroy telegraphed another pass to Geoffery Howard who returned the interception 68 Yds for a TD as time expired on the half; the game a true test at 17-14 Alabama.
The second half was much kinder to the Alabama Crimson Tide, who went back to 1st quarter form while taking a 24-14 lead into the 4th quarter after a Marquis Maze 24 Yd TD pass from McElroy.
The Rebels did not quit there though, moving the ball down the field and capping off the 10 play 75 yard drive with a 5 Yd TD pass to Casey Flair to cut the lead to 24-21. On the ensuing kickoff, Marquis Maze would give Bama the breathing room they needed, returning the kickoff 88 Yds for the TD and more importantly a 31-21 lead. After another stop and magnificent score on a 54 Yd TD run by Mark Ingram, the Rebels simply ran out of time and energy, falling to the Crimson Tide, 45-28.
Coach Michael Scott had this to say after the game, "WOWEE! That was so fun. It's time to go get some Scotch and Splenda: Tastes like Splenda, gets you drunk like scotch!"
