E3 A Gamer's Christmas?
Posted on June 13, 2010 at 03:41 PM.
For the three or four folks who have read my handful of blogs in the past, they know that I consider myself an old school gamer. I have played tons of games on just about every console ever made (with the exception of 3D0 and Neo Geo).

Over the past ten years-plus years, my favorite time of year shifted from the holiday season to late spring, early summer because of E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo for the new folks). If you are a gamer, E3 is an event where we get a sneak peak as to what is in store for us for the second half of the year and, in some cases, teasers as to what we can expect in years to come.

This year is no different. I have my DVR set to record every hour of E3 coverage on G4, Spike TV and MTV. As a matter of fact, I still have last year's E3 recorded. Although E3 is closed to the public, to have networks that carry commercial free coverage is a gamer's dream.

One of my favorite parts of E3 are the conferences held by Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and some of the publishers. Outside of the trend graphs and PowerPoint presentations that are designed to show each company's stranglehold on the business of gaming, I really enjoy watching some of the top-tier suits trying to sell us on why their console is best and what we can expect for the next 12 months.

Of course, E3 wouldn't be E3 without huge announcements regarding hardware and software. One of the things I am looking forward to most from this year's E3 is more information regarding "Project Natal". Is it going to meet the hype and what games can we expect to see?

Since E3 only allows journalists and employees from the gaming industry to attend, what I wish publishers would do is provide E3 demos on PSN and XBox Live of games that they are showing at E3. This way the general public, which is the most important sector of the gaming industry, to get an early look at some of the games shown "behind closed doors". I understand that much of what is shown is in early development but at least allow gamers to sip from the royal chalice and get a taste of what is to come.

What do you think of E3 and what are you most looking forward to?

I wish that E3 was open to the public.

I agree but if it were how much fun would it actually be? There are already a ton of people from the industry who attend. I would rather ALL information and behind closed doors information be made public...
