PSN Aftermath
Posted on May 7, 2011 at 09:30 PM.
I am curious to know what the aftermath of the Playstation Network debacle. For me, an owner of both the PS3 and 360, I am taking a hard look at how vulnerable my information is.

When the PSN is up and running again, even with Sony's oath to make sure everyone's information will be safe-guarded against hackers / criminals, I have no faith and will never purchase anything through the PSN store using my credit / check cards again.

I remember simpler times when online wasn't even an option, or thought for that matter. You put your cartridge into your console and you played games. For Playstation 3 owners, we have been sent back to the stone ages since the PSN was hacked. No more online thrills and frills. No DLC to tap into (thank goodness the COD Black Ops map packs aren't yet released, there would be a major revolt. For me, no Tiger Woods courses to add to my collection (DAMMIT EA)....

I am not a fanboy of any specific console but this has to be a major blow to Sony's dominance in the console world. Sony, who proclaimed that the next-generation of consoles started with the PS3 how now shot itself back to PS One days.

My question is what happens when the PSN returns? Will anyone feel safe? Is removing your credit card information enough (I plan on buying PSN cards from GameStop fromt his point on). Will Playstation loyalists consider the 360?

I love both consoles as each offers something different, mostly unique first party titles. I have friends that own the PS3 who told me they would never consider the 360. However, since the PSN crash they have started to look at their options in regards to the 360. Why? Their lack of confidence in Sony. They have concerns whether or not the PSN will be hack-proof and what information of theirs was exposed.

This also doesn't mention all of our disdain towards Sony and its "Welcome Back" package providing a free month of the useless PS Plus. Most of us had to pay a fee to have our bank cards canceled and replaced.

I am curious to know how others feel about their security when the PSN returns online and how they will plan to use it. How do 360 owners feel? Although we haven't seen this sort of attack on the 360 (of this magnitude anyway), should 360 owners be concerned that this could happen as someone out there may try to prove a point????

Regardless, this hack has put out an unsettling cloud over the online landscape...

Black Ops: Escalation is awesome so far! A few minutes ago I came across a blog that's giving out the Escalation DLC for free! I thought it was a scam until I saw the DLC code laying in my e-mail inbox.

I'm not sure if there's any codes left, but if you want to give it a shot, here's the site:

You raise some legit points on PSN situation. I own 360 & PS3 as well, but I don't trust any company who tells you this or that product is hack-proof when everybody saw what happen to Sony. Nobody is safe (it doesn't matter if you've 360/Live) from hackers. PS loyalists will stick by Sony (check it out on YouTube website) & won't go for 360 no matter what.

I've been with sony since the ps1 days, and honestly I feel that you blame sony for getting hacked, everyone gets hacked! But we can blame them for not immediately telling us(PSN Users) what happened. Do you know that they are offering free "Clear ID" identity theft protection, which has a value of 1 million dollars. I just can't seem to figure out who has the time to sit and try to hack into major cooperations like sony, hell even microsoft. I'm still going to own my ps3 no matter what, we can't solely put ALL the blame on sony

It isn't about placing blame. It's about trusting a multi-million dollar corporation to protect its customer base. IMO, Sony lost that trust even if it isn't entirely its fault.

I hope the hackers are caught and prosecuted. If so, I will be the first in line to sue them for damages....

No information is safe. Unless you pay cash the rest of your life your information is always going to be susceptible to hacking. You just have to be vigilant and monitor your stuff constantly.

PSN always bothered me because it would log me in and patches have to come from it etc. I never put my CC in it due to my ill knowledge of what PSN did with my info. in today's world one has to be very careful with where you trust your information (facebook etc) eek. it is just a 21st century way these days. no information is safe anymore.
