Phoenix Coyotes: The Start of a Dynasty!

A New Start In Arizona!

I'm going to go back to one of the first teams I did in NHL14 BAGM, the Phoenix Coyotes! I'm thinking of going the distance with this GM Mode finally, as my recently previous GM Modes have either been erased or I've fallen bored with them. I'm going to do things a little different with this GM Mode:

1. All games will be played manually.
2. All trades must be realistic.
3. If an unrealistic player, such as Jonathan Toews, appears in Free Agency they will be not be signed by thePhoenix Coyotes.
4. At least one player drafted in the 2014 Draft must suit up for the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2014-2015 season and be a part of the top two lines.
5. In Drafts, I can only move up to a top five selection if my pick is a top 10 selection. I can move up to any top 10 selection I want, however, if I acquired another team's draft choice and it happens to be a top 10 pick it cannot be upgraded.
6. If a player has at least two/three bad seasons, he will be traded.
7. I can have maximum of three first round draft picks each year, and a maximum of two second round picks each year.
8. I must have at least 3 picks in the top three rounds.
9. I can only make 1-4 trades each season.
10. I must make the playoffs before I can sign a free agent that is 85+ overall.

The Plan For the Early Years

Honestly our forward core isn't too great, and we are lacking in forward prospects. Our defensive core and goaltending is strong and will undoubtedly be built around. I'll be looking to acquire one more first round draft choice for the 2014 draft, and will be drafting top-heavy in forward prospects. Mark Visentin looks like he can be a suitable replacement for Mike Smith when he retires, so goaltending prospects aren't much of a worry for now. Defensively we have a pretty good core, and I would really only be looking to add one or two defensemen in the next three Drafts! I don't think we'll make the playoffs with this roster in the first season (as I am simulating), but I think next year may be a better year for us, especially after the draft. Our defensive core might be able to bail us out, but if we make the playoffs I predict a short run.

2013-2014 Season

First Trade-Trade Deadline: Lucas Lessio (70 overall 3.5 yellow stars) to Anaheim for Teemu Selanne (81 overall 4 white stars) and a 2014 2nd round pick.

Reasoning: Simply another player rental to push us for the playoffs. We are sitting in first in our conference, and Teemu can't possibly hurt our team. A little extra scoring in our bottom six might actually make our team cup contenders!

Short Season Overview: Bringing in Teemu Selanne was the worst trade I've ever made in a GM Mode. After sitting in first place in our conference, slotting Teemu into the third line dropped our team's play and we failed to make the playoffs, finishing the season with 41 wins (our owner was asking for 36). Pretty disappointing, can't believe our guys couldn't get the job done. Some changes will definitely be made at the draft and in the offseason, as although I didn't have high hopes for our team I can't believe this meltdown.
*Usually I manually play every game, so each season wrapup you can expect to be much more detailed with player stats and team stats.

Second Trade-2014 Entry Draft: Traded Mike Ribeiro (83 overall 4 white stars) and our 11th overall pick to Colorado for the 6th overall pick

Reasoning: With mouth-watering prospects slated to go in the top six picks of the draft, I knew I had to grab a young stud forward this year. This was a chance I couldn't pass up, and Ribeiro didn't play up to standards in the 2014-2015 season.

Third Trade-2014 Entry Draft: Traded our 57th overall pick, 55th overall pick, and our 71st overall pick to Carolina for the 34th overall pick and the 64th overall pick

Reasoning: With the chances of a better prospect at 34th Overall and 64 Overall, we decided to go quality over quantity when we made this deal.

6th Overall Pick: Kasperi Kapanen (65 overall 4.5 yellow stars)
34th Overall Pick: Sam Bennett (72 overall 4.5 yellow stars)
41st Overall Pick: Joshua Ho-Sang (69 overall 4 yellow stars)
64th Overall Pick: Connor Honey (55 overall 3.5 yellow stars)
91st Overall Pick: Julius Honka (65 overall 4.5 red stars)

In other interesting draft news, Nashville actually addressed their weak forward prospect needs by drafting Jake Virtanen, Tampa Bay added to its unbelievable prospect pool by pick Aaron Ekblad, and Buffalo drafted Sam Reinhart.

2014-2015 Season Start

Signed Jaromir Jagr to a one year, 5.3 million dollar deal to mentor Sam Bennett on the second line. Hopefully his goal scoring can help Bennett win the Calder Trophy, and more importantly, spark our team to a playoff berth.

First Trade-Offseason: Derek Morris (82 overall defensemen) and a 2nd round pick (2015) to Calgary for T.J Galiardi (84 overall 3.5 red stars)

Reasoning: With our team overrun with good defensemen, Michael Stone (82 overall 3.5 green stars) would've had to play in the minors this year. With Morris getting older, we decided to package him and our second round pick to a team with a young 3rd liner who can be a mainstay on our team. Galiardi off of Calgary seemed like the best fit, and a deal was made.

Second Trade-Preseason: Radim Vrbata (84 overall 4 white stars) to Ottawa for their first round pick (2015), Mason Raymond (79 overall 3.5 white stars), and Erik Condra (78 overall 3.5 white stars)

Reasoning: Our team was overrun with snipers with the recent signing of Jaromir Jagr, and Mikeal Boedker would have been playing the season on the third line had this move not transpired. Boedker now has room to play on the first line, right where he should be playing. Although Vrbata was growing older, I really didn't want to give him up. Looking ahead to the 2015 draft, there are some great prospects ahead such as Connor MacDavid and Jack Eichel so I knew I would need another first round pick to continue bringing in young talent. Raymond and Condra were nice pickups for our AHL team, as they do not fit in with my bottom six; I prefer grinders or two-way forwards for the bottom six roles.
