First thing is first, go watch Newton's CAMpaign video.
The premise behind the video is just Cam talking himself up, having some fun and offering a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play him in Madden 12. But the part that intrigued me the most was at the 1:26 minute mark.
Newton challenges Calvin Johnson, the other finalist in the Madden cover vote, to a game of Madden 12. Newton wants to stream it live to the Internet for fans everywhere to follow. He really has a great idea here. What if players determined their lucky chance of getting on the cover?
It would take away from the fun the fans get for voting in the bracket (partially), and it likely would have prevented Peyton Hillis from getting on the cover since his Facebook following wouldn't have meant anything. However, the gains could mean so much more, especially for the likes of ESPN and EA.
First of all, get one representative per team, then have the consumer vote down to eight or 16 participants, or even just the Final Four. After that, EA could host a party featuring all the athletes ready to play in the Madden tournament. Each game would be live streamed, and the final could be broadcasted on ESPN with interviews from developers and other players throughout. If ESPN can make money on The Decision, they can with Madden.
The excitement would beat anything a public, online vote brings. I even thought of a nice slogan to go with it: Vote the gamer, not the player.
What about you? Do you think it would be a good idea having players compete for the cover?

I wouldn't say that this is my favorite idea. We already have the Madden Bowl, and ESPN is horrible at broadcasting it. I doubt this would be any better.

Good idea but he should have spent a lot more time planning out his video so he didn't come across like the player formerly known as Chad Johnson.

Shhhhhhhhhhh! Don't give EA more schemes to make money please. I've given them enough money as it is for thier last 7 Madden's that I no longer have anymore. If anything they should just make it simple and surprising instead of building anticipation and knowing it's either going to be this guy or this guy. I'd like it if they just said "well, here it is guys, the new Madden cover." Now it's a gimmick that drags on and on waiting for a somewhat predictable winner to be crowned for a cover. Sports players get put on covers all the time (magazines, cereal boxes, promotional deals) its not that big of a deal to me. I could careless if they used the NFL shield and not a player. Fact of the matter is, it's all one big promotional scheme to build up Madden and it's sales when in reality, I think EA has bigger fish to fry.
